This paper studies a monopsonist-supplier model in which the buyer can choose one of two technologies; current vs. new technology. The production cost under the current technology is publicly known while on the new technology only the supplier can gather information on the exact production cost with some resources. Therefore, the buyer may or may not induce the supplier to gather information on the exact production cost under the new technology. I discuss how availability of the current technology and unobservability of the agent’s information gathering activity affect the buyer’s strategies regarding gathering information. The relative benefit of inducing to deterring gathering information increases as the publicly known technology becomes available except extreme cases. The unobservability of the supplier’s information gathering activity may increase the relative benefit of inducing to deterring gathering information.

본 논문은 계약 당사자들 사이에 정보가 공개된 대안(기존 기술)과 그렇지 않은 대안(새로운 기술)이 존재하는 경우의 주인(부품 수요기업)-대리인(부품 납품업자) 모형을 분석한다. 기존 기술 하에서의 생산비용은 계약 당사자들 사이에 정확하게 공개되어 있는 반면, 새로운 기술 하에서의 생산비용에 대한 정보는 대리인만이 일정한 비용을 들여 수집할 수 있으며, 고비용이나 저비용 중 하나의 형태를 갖는다. 이때 주인은 새로운 기술에 대한 대리인의 정보수집이 이루어지도록 하는 전략을 택할 수도 있고, 정보수집이 이루어지지 않도록 하는 전략을 선택할 수도 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 상황에서 기존 기술의 선택 가능성이 새로운 기술에 대한 정보수집의 가치를 어떻게 변화시키는지에 대해 분석한다. 그 결과, 기존 기술의 선택 가능성은 기존 기술이 매우 효율적이거나 매우 비효율적인 경우를 제외하고는 새로운 기술에 대한 정보수집이 이루어지도록 하는 전략의 상대적 가치(정보수집의 가치)를 높이는 것으로 나타난다. 아울러 대리인의 정보수집활동이나 그 결과 대리인이 획득한 정보를 주인이 직접 관찰할 수 없다는 점이 오히려 정보수집의 가치를 높일 수 있는 것으로 나타난다.
