Financial crisis-suffered Asian countries including Korea have faced substantial economic recessions for several years aftermath the crisis. In this connection, economists have recently reconsidered 'the contractionary devaluation hypothesis' which means devaluation is contractionary. This paper empirically examine whether 'the contractionary devaluation hypothesis' could explain recent Korean economy, with using a bivariate analysis and a vector error correction model. I find evidence that it is difficult to support 'the contractionary devaluation hypothesis' when controlling for the crisis shock which sharply reduced both currency value, output and domestic demand. The results from the paper imply that Korean Won's depreciation is not the significant reason for the sluggish domestic demand and economic recession since the crisis, but other problems may account for it. Nevertheless, the results of this paper don't necessarily mean authorities have to continue to implement FX policy to boost exports as was in the past.

한국을 비롯한 아시아외환위기 경험국가들은 위기이전보다 상당 폭 절하된 자국통화가치수준이 지속되는 가운데 위기이후 몇 년간 상당한 경기후퇴(recession)를 겪었다. 이와 관련하여 최근 통화가치 절하가 경기를 위축시키는 작용을 한다는 '긴축적 평가절하(contractionary devaluation)'가설이 재주목을 받고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 '긴축적 평가절하 가설'로써 최근의 한국경제를 설명할 수 있는지 2변량분석과 오차수정모형을 이용하여 실증분석하였다. 분석결과 원화가치와 실질생산 및 내수를 모두 급감시킨 금융위기 충격을 배제하는 경우에는 '긴축적 평가절하' 가설을 지지하기 어려운 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 외환위기 이후 수 년간 한국경제의 내수부진과 함께 경기위축을 초래한 유의적인 원인이 환율상승(원화 절하)에 있다고 보기는 어렵고 다른 문제에 보다 근본적인 원인이 있다고 봐야 한다는 함의를 제공한다. 하지만 본 연구 결과가 과거와 같이 수출증대를 위한 환율지지정책을 지속해야 한다는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니다.
