The Results and contribution of this paper are the following. First, we collected all data about the Busan manufacturing by size and sector and made the first time-series statistics of it in 1945-2000. Second, we tested the existing views about changes of Busan manufacturing by size and by sector and suggested the need of new research of it. With the newly made statistics by size, this paper verified that (1) the exit of large manufacturing firms started from the late 1970s, much earlier than it has been recognized, (2) that the causes of their exit were different from the existing thoughts, (3) and that with the exit of companies, downsizing has also developed quickly. The newly made statistics by sector show that the core problem of Busan heavy and chemical industry was not the problem related with the nationwide heavy and chemical industrialization policy in the 1970s, but the intrinsic one of heavy industry from the end of the 1960s and of chemical industry of Busan in the 1980s respectively.

본 연구의 성과는 크게 두 가지이다. 첫째는 산재되어 있는 부산지역 제조업의 규모별 부문별 자료를 모두 수집하여 정비하였다. 둘째, 정비된 규모별, 부문별 통계자료를 통해 부산지역 제조업에 대한 기존의 인식에 재검토가 필요함을 제시하였다.부산 제조업을 규모별로 보면 대기업의 역외이전은 알려진 것보다 훨씬 일찍 1970년대 후반부터 진행되었으며, 따라서 역외이전의 원인이 기존의 원인인식과 다르다는 점, 그리고 대기업의 역외이전과 동시에 영세화가 진행되었음을 발견했다. 그리고 부문별 고찰의 결과 부산의 중화학공업 문제는 전국적인 중화학공업화와 관련된 문제가 아니라 1960년대 말부터 진행된 중공업, 1980년대부터의 화학공업의 내적인 문제였음을 발견했다.
