The purpose of this study is to analyze the wage differentials by subject of degree in Korean college graduates. We use data from the labor panel survey 2001 of Korean Labor Institutes (KLIPS) and focus on two major groups, that is, the science and engineering(SE) college graduates and the non-science and engineering(NSE) college graduates. The standard Mincer wage equations are first formulated for two major fields and then the Oaxaca wage decomposition method is applied. We find the following main results. First, with respect to the education and career variables, the SE college graduates earn relatively lower than the NSE college graduates. Second, the overall wage differential through different model specifications consists of 72%～95% of the explained portion and 28%～5% of the unexplained portion. Third, the SE college workers are faced with wage discrimination even under the same level of education and career years. Our result might be useful for partly explaining the existing avoidance phenomenon of the SE fields in Korean labor market and provide the policy directions of reducing the wage differentials by subject of degree.

본 연구는 최근 이공계 기피현상의 원인을 파악하기 위해 임금보상 측면에 초점을 두고 전공계열간 임금격차에 관하여 분석하였다. 한국노동연구원「노동패널조사」4차년도 자료를 가지고 인문사회계열과 자연공학계열 전공자를 중심으로 임금방정식을 추정하여 인적자본 변수 및 그 외 통제변수들의 계수 값을 비교해 본 다음, Oaxaca 임금분해방법을 이용하여 전공계열간에 차이적 요소와 차별적 요소의 비중을 살펴보았다. 주요결과를 요약하면 첫째, 교육년수와 경력과 같은 생산성 변수들의 추정계수가 자연공학계열보다는 인문사회계열에서 더 크게 나타나 생산성에 대한 보상수준이 인문사회계열에 비해 자연공학계열에서 열악함을 보여준다. 둘째, Oaxaca 임금분해방법을 이용하여 분해한 결과, 전반적인 계열간 임금격차는 차이적 요소에 의해 상당히 기인한다고 볼 수 있으나 차별적 요소도 전공계열간 임금격차에 적지 않은 영향을 미치고 있다. 셋째, 계열간 임금격차를 설명하는데 세부적 변수로서 생산성과 관련된 교육년수와 경력변수는 차이적 요소뿐만 아니라 차별적 요소로도 중요하게 작용하였다. 이러한 결과는 최근 나타나는 이공계 기피심화 현상이 임금보상 측면에서 잘 설명될 수 있음을 보여준다.
