This paper empirically investigates how the long-term relative improvement of labor-market performance of females in Korea influenced son-preference revealed in sex ratios at birth. If parental preference for offspring gender depends on relative expected incomes of sons and daughters, economic theory predicts that relative rise of female expected income will weaken son preference. Analyses of county/district-level data show that female-to-male ratios of wage was negatively related to sex ratio at birth, as predicted by the theory.

이 논문은 여성 노동시장성과의 상대적인 개선이 출생성비를 통해 드러나는 아들선호에 미친 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 이론적으로 볼 때 자녀의 성별에 대한 부모의 선호가 적어도 부분적으로 아들과 딸의 상대적인 기대소득에 의존한다면 여성 기대소득의 상대적인 증가는 아들선호를 약화시킬 것이다. 시군구 수준 데이터를 이용한 패널회귀분석결과는 이론적인 예상과 같이 남성 대비 여성의 임금비율이 출생성비와 음의 관계를 갖는다는 것을 보여준다.
