The objective of this study is to figure out the importance of general mechatronics industry through the input-output analysis to understand the exact position of the industry in Korean economy. In particular, this study examines the main factors on the growth of the Korean mechatronics industry by the decomposition of aggregate output. Major findings of this study are as follows; First, the general mechatronics industry’s contribution to the growth of aggregate output has been decreasing after the 1998 financial crisis of Korea, although the corresponding industry’s ratio to the Korean economy is relatively higher than other industries. Second, general mechatronics industry’s final demand, export, and import substitution for final goods play key roles on the growth of aggregate output among the major factors. In conclusion, demand for export has an important role, and puts major impact on the expansion of the aggregate output. Thus, it is required to raise the ratio of export localization of parts and components and intermediary materials for the sustainable growth of the mechatronics industry. It is also required to lower the import dependency for the mechatronics-related intermediary goods and final products.

본 연구의 목적은 투입산출 구조분해(Input-Output Structural Decom- position Analysis)를 통해 일반기계산업의 성장기여요인을 분석하는 것이다. 분해분석 결과(mid-point weight 기준) 요인별 성장기여율은 2000～2003년 기간 중 최종수요(47.2%), 수출수요(43.0 %), 최종재수입대체(12.3%)의 순으로 나타났다. 국내소비, 특히 투자에 의해 크게 영향을 받는 최종수요 성장기여율이 2000～20003년 들어 1990년대 중반보다 훨씬 낮아졌는데, 기계산업에 대한 중장기적 관점의 투자활성화가 필요하다. 특히 후방연쇄효과가 큰 일반목적용 기계관련 부품, 소재, 연구개발 등에 대한 투자가 더욱 확충될 필요가 있다. 또한 최종재수입대체 성장기여율이 1995～2000년 30.7%에서 2000～2003년 12.3%로 급락하고 있는데, 이는 국산최종재로의 대체비율이 낮아져 최종재에 대한 수입의존도가 크게 높아졌다는 의미이다. 따라서 기계류관련 수입최종재에 대한 수입의존도를 낮출 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 일반기계산업의 국제경쟁력을 높일 수 있는, 즉 가격경쟁력 및 품질경쟁력 제고를 위해 값싸고 질 높은 부품소재 개발능력, 품질의 완성도 제고 등 효율적인 공급망 관리체계를 마련할 필요가 있다.
