Search in the marriage market is dictated by its cost and the expected marriage benefit with a potential partner. Women who become pregnant during a search may experience an increase in search cost due to reduced desirability and marry in haste, which can affect the prospect of divorce later on. We theoretically and empirically investigate whether premarital conceptions increase the probability of divorce in a dynamic framework. We find that premarital conceptions in general increase the probability of divorce. This result indicates that the rising divorce rate in Korea can be attributed to the prevalence of premarital conceptions.

결혼 시장에서의 배우자 탐색은 그 비용과 결혼 후 얻게 되는 편익을 비교하여 이루어지게 된다. 탐색이 종료되기 전 혼전임신을 하게 되면 탐색비용의 변화를 가져오게 되어 결혼 결정, 더 나아가 차후 이혼 결정에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 연구는 배우자를 탐색하는 과정에서 임신을 한 여성이 서둘러 결혼을 하였을 경우, 이혼의 가능성이 커짐을 동태모형에서 이론과 실증적으로 보여준다. 혼전임신 때문에 출산 전 결혼한 경우(혼전임신-결혼)와 출산 후에 결혼한 경우(혼전임신-출산)는 결혼 후에 임신한 경우보다 이혼 확률을 증가시켰고, 혼전임신-출산이 혼전임신-결혼보다 이혼에 미치는 영향이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 한국의 이혼율 증가 원인을 파악하는 데 있어서 혼전임신의 영향을 살펴 보아야함을 지적하고 있다.
