This paper critically examines the methods and results of Hall and Gingerich (2009) in the “varieties of capitalism” (VoC) approach and focuses on South Korea. First, their study does not embrace “varieties of development” of each nation due to the oversimplification of VoC. Moreover, patterns of market economies have no persistency. Second, the Korean market economy shows properties of both coordinated market economies and liberal market economies. Last, the “U-shaped growth curve” has weak evidence and can be replaced with the “reverse U-shaped growth curve.” To summarize, the comparative advantages in VoC have no concrete statistical evidence.

본 연구는 자본주의 다양성(varieties of capitalism)의 논의의 대표적 연구인 Hall and Gingerich(2009)의 통계적 기법 및 결과에 대해서 비판적으로 검증하면서, 자본주의 다양성 논의에서 한국 자본주의 시장경제의 특질을 밝히고자 한다. 자본주의 다양성 논의의 지나친 유형화는 다양한 국가의 발전적 특질을 포괄하지 못하며, 자본주의 다양성 논의에 맞는 지속성을 보이는 국가는 희소하다. 본 연구에서는 한국이 기업 지배구조 영역에서 조정시장 경제의 특질을, 노사관계 영역에서 자유시장 경제의 특질을 보이며, ‘U자형 성장곡선 가설’보다는 ‘역U자형 성장곡선 가설’이 보다 설득력이 높다는 것을 밝혔다. 요컨대 자본주의 다양성 논의에서 제도적 비교우위를 전제한 성장전략을 제시하는 것은 통계적 증거가 부족함을 지적하고자 한다.
