This study examines socio-economic factors which affect regional differences in the divorce rate. A regression analysis is carried out with a panel data of 232 regions (cities-counties-boroughs) in Korea for the 2000-2011 period. The empirical results indicate that an increase in women’s employment rate resulted in an increase in this year’s and next year’s divorce rate. An increase in men’s employment rate led to a decrease in next year’s divorce rate. Additionally, the results show that the more intercultural marriages between Korean men and foreign women, the higher the divorce rate. In contrast, intercultural marriages between Korean women and foreign men had no effect on the divorce rate. While strengthening social integrity tended to reduce the divorce rate, improvement in the social status of women tended to increase the divorce rate.

본 연구는 우리나라 시ㆍ군ㆍ구별로 이혼율에 상당한 편차가 있다는 점에 주목하고 그 사회ㆍ경제적 원인을 규명하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 본 연구는 2000∼2011년 기간의 전국 232개 시ㆍ군ㆍ구 패널자료를 사용해 회귀분석을 수행한다. 본 연구의 분석결과에 따르면, 여성 고용률 증가는 당해 연도와 다음 연도의 이혼율을 증가시킨 반면에, 남성 고용률 증가는 1기간 시차를 갖고 다음 연도의 이혼율을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 한국인 남성과 외국인 여성 사이의 국제결혼 비율이 높은 지역에서 이혼율이 높았던 반면에, 한국인 여성과 외국인 남성 사이의 국제결혼 비율은 이혼율에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 사회적 통합정도는 이혼을 억제하는 효과를, 여성의 사회적 지위와 협상력 강화는 이혼을 촉진하는 효과를 가진 것으로 확인되었다.
