This paper examines the time consciousness of Choi Ha-Rim’s poetry in comparison to the historicity. Through this, this paper tries to find out how his poetic thought is generated by approaching his poetic technique of transcending the linear time of the past, future, and present and intersecting or recalling thoughts. In other words, it intends to examine how the historicity that appears in his poetry is transformed creatively by the time consciousness that flows through his poems and contribute to expanding the meaning of the poetic space of Choi Ha-Rim. In Choi’s poem, time is created in the relationship between me and the society. The two kinds of time, of me and of the society, embrace each other without rejecting each other. For him, the present is open to the past that I no longer live in and is open to future that I do not live in yet, and it gets the possibility to acquire a social horizon. Thus, the present I am in now can lead my personal existence to the dimension of universality of collective history. This paper intends to approach Choi Ha-Rim’s time consciousness through the image of fire and water. In his poetry, the image of fire in relation to time has a future-oriented nature toward historical universality, while the image of water has a source orientation that opens toward the past. However, the two are not dichotomically separated from each other, but sublimate into lyrical and compassionate poetry by the moderate time consciousness by which fire and water infiltrate into each other and create balance.

본고는 최하림 초기 시에 나타난 시간 의식을 역사성과 대비시켜 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통해 과거와 미래와 현재의 선형적 시간을 종횡하면서, 사유를 교차시키거나 환기시키는 그의 시적 기법에 접근함으로써 그의 시적 사유가 어떻게 생성되는지 알아보고자 한다. 즉, 그의 시에 나타나 있는 역사성이 그의 시 전체를 관류하고 있는 시간의식에 의해 어떻게 창조적으로 변모해나가는지 살펴봄으로써 최하림 시의 시적 공간이 갖는 의미를 확장시키는데 일조하고자 한다. 최하림의 시에서 시간성이란 나와 사회의 관계에서 생겨나는 것이다. 나와 사회라는 두 시간성은 서로를 배척하지 않고 감싸 안는다. 그에게 있어 현재란 더 이상 내가 살지 않는 과거를 향해 열리는 한편으로 아직 내가 살지 않는 미래의 시간성들 쪽으로 열리며 하나의 사회적 지평을 획득할 수 있게 된다. 그럼으로써 내가 있는 현재는 나의 개인적 실존을 집단적인 역사의 보편성 차원으로 이끌어갈 수 있게 한다. 본고는 이러한 최하림 초기 시의 시간 의식을 불과 물의 이미지를 통해 접근하고자 한다. 그의 시에서 시간과 관련하여 나타나는 불의 이미지는 역사적 보편성을 향해 나아가는 미래 지향성을 띄며, 반면 물의 이미지는 과거를 향해 열리는 근원지향적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 그러나 양자는 서로 이분법적으로 분리되어 있는 것이 아니라 불과 물이 상호 침투하여 균형을 이루는 중용적인 시간 의식에 의해 서정적이고 연민 어린 시세계로 승화된다.
