Comparing Chinese and Korean in (Pseudo-)Fragmenting

초록

영어

Meeting the congruence between question and answer clauses, a fragmentary answer clause also occurs in Chinese: (1)A: Zhang San zhidao Li Si mai-le shenme. B: we renwei *(shi) xiaoshuo. (2) A: Li Si mai-le shenme. B: (*shi) xiaoshuo. (1A) and (2A) contain the embedded question and the matrix question, respectively. In response to these questions, we may use the fragmentary form of the embedded and the matrix answer clauses as in (1B) and (2B). Note that the copula shi occurs with the fragmentary answer phrases. The fragmentary answer sentence was initially named the Fragment construction, the representative example of which in English is given below: (3) A: What did John buy yesterday? B: A novel. In this paper, we use the term Fragmenting instead of Fragment to highlight the nature of the operation that derives the Fragment construction, as a process corresponding to the operation of Sluicing that derives the fragmentary question clause in English. Thus, Pseudo-Fragmenting refers to the operation of deriving the fragmentary answer clause that contains the copula. It is often mentioned that there is a congruence or correspondence between question and As in the Q-sentences and the 'bare' question words such as shei 'who' and sheme 'what' are used for a question. In response to them, the fragmentary answer clause in the embedded context as in the A-sentences of (4) and (5) requires the presence of the copula shi. This is expected, given the correspondence between question and answer, since as we saw in the previous section, the fragmentary question clause with the 'bare' question words such as shei 'who' and sheme 'what' also calls for the obligatory presence of the copula. However, this parallelism does not hold when the question phrase is 'complex',answer in light of meaning and structure. We saw a fragmentary or short question clause.
