Modernity of Kim Su-young's poetry ― The new understanding about modernity ― Kim, You-joong This article starts with the fundamental question concerning the characteristics of the modernity in Kim Su-young's literature. To him, modernity is not simply the result of Western modern spirit ; it cannot be accepted as a fixed form or a dogmatic form like this. Instead it can be recognized and regarded as the self-will to be renewed everlastingly. From this viewpoint, his poetics is not different from the ideal of modernity, for what he seeks in his poems is the possibility and will for endless self-renovation. He attempts to overcome the limit of the modern through this frame of thought. His understanding of modernity is contrasted to the case of Kim Ki-rim, who had similar thought a little earlier than Kim Su-young. Kim Ki-rim approaches this concept from the viewpoint of philosophy of history; to him modernity is a task which should be pursued actively with the birth of modern period and should be gotten rid of at the end of modern period. In contrast, Kim Su-young believes that we are still in the modern stage, and emphasizes that modernity should be newly recognized as the reawakening the necessity of endless self-renovation. The difference is apparent in understanding historic change of the lyrical form. Kim Ki-rim regards songs with communal consciousness as the desirable lyric form, whilst Kim Su-young argues the necessity of accepting non-poetic or prosaic element for the nenewal and self-renovation of poetic form. It is a matter of debate to insist that we are still in the modern society. However, it is clear that to overcome modernity we need to start from the new understanding and overcoming the thought of modernity.

이 논문은 김수영 문학에 나타난 모더니티의 특성에 대한 근원적인 의문으로부터 출발한다. 그에게서 모더니티란 단순히 서구적인 근대 정신의 산물에 그치는 것이 아니었다. 모더니티란 이렇게 고정된 개념으로, 혹은 교조화된 형태로 인식되고 받아들여질 수 있는 것이 아니었던 것이다. 그것은 항상 새로워지려는 자기 혁신에의 의지라 할 수 있다. 이런 관점에서 볼 때, 그의 시작 또한 이런 그의 모더니티의 이념과 다르지 않아 보인다. 그가 시작을 통해 추구한 것은 늘 스스로 새로워지려는 자기 혁신에서의 가능성과 의지였기 때문이다. 이와 같은 사유의 틀을 통해 그는 근대의 한계를 극복하기 위해 노력하였던 것이다. 그의 모더니티에 대한 이해는 그보다 앞서 유사한 모색을 하였던 김기림의 경우와 대비될 수 있다. 김기림은 역사 철학적인 관점에 입각하여, 모더니티란 근대의 시작과 더불어 적극적으로 추진되어야 할 과제이며, 근대의 몰락과 더불어 폐기되어야 할 대상이라고 생각하였다. 이에 반해 김수영은 우리 사회는 아직도 근대의 연장에 위치해 있으며, 그와 동시에 모더니티란 항상적인 자기 혁신의 과정으로 새롭게 재인식되지 않으면 안된다는 점을 강조하였다. 이런 그들의 차이는 서정 양식의 시대적 변화와 관련된 대목에서도 극명하게 드러난다. 김기림이 이후 우리가 추구하여야 할 서정 양식으로 공동체 의식을 담은 노래를 강조하였던 데 비해, 김수영은 시 양식의 새로운 자기 혁신과 갱신이 가능하기 위해서는 산문적인 요소, 비(非) 시적인 요소가 과감히 도입될 필요성이 있다고 주장했던 것이다. 오늘날 우리가 아직 근대 사회 속에 머물고 있는지에 대해서는 다소간의 논란의 여지가 있을 수 있다. 그러나 분명한 것은 근대의 극복이란, 김수영이 강조하였듯이, 그와 같은 근대적인 모더니티의 사유 체계를 새롭게 이해하고 극복하는 데서부터 출발하여야 하리라는 점이다.
