The annotation is a description of the meaning of a vocabulary that is not understood and is written in a clear and easy way. The annotation is a collection of the results of research on the unknown facts of the past, and the annotation work is part of the basic and professional work for studying classical understanding methods. It can be said that it is a method of modern Japanese studies to continue the study through commentary work faithfully understanding the contents of the classics, and it can be said that it is distant from the classical understanding through the theory of Buddhism or Confucianism. The classics mentioned in the modern age Kokugaku indicate the myth of Kojiki and Nihonshoki, and the myth about “Kojiki” greatly changed the conventional perception of myth. Through the annotations, it is possible to understand the ancient vocabulary and to grasp the contents of myths, so that myths can be recreated according to the times. The myth annotation of the modern age can be regarded as having significance in two aspects of the phase change of the myth of Kojiki and Nihonshoki and creation of the modern myth. Along with the background of the modern age in which commentary work and commentary writing were required, Japanese myth was of great value as a research subject, and through this process, “Kojiki” was able to have a status as the oldest literary work in the flow of Japanese literary history in modern times.

주석이란 모르는 어휘의 뜻을 찾아 알기 쉽게 풀이하여 적거나 이해하기 어려운 문구 등을 상세히 고찰하여 적은 내용을 말한다. 주석은 과거의 모르는 사실에 대해 연구한 결과를 모아둔 것이며, 주석 작업은 고전 이해의 방법을 연구하기 위한 기초적이면서 전문적인 작업의 일환이라고 할 수 있다. 고전의 내용을 충실히 이해하여 주석 작업을 통한 연구를 계속하는 것이 근세 국학의 방법이라고 볼 수 있으며, 이는 불교나 유교의 이론을 통한 고전의 이해와는 거리를 둔 것이라 할 수 있다. 근세 국학에서 말하는 고전이란 기기신화를 가리키며, 『고지키』가 중심이 된 신화주석은 신화에 대한 종래의 인식을 크게 변화시켰다. 주석을 통하여 고대의 어휘를 이해하고 신화 내용을 파악할 수 있게 되어 신화를 그 시대에 맞게 재창조할 수 있게 된 것이다. 근세기의 신화주석은 기기신화의 위상 변화와 근세신화 창조라는 두 가지 측면에서 큰 의의를 지니고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 주석 작업과 주석서의 집필이 요구되었던 근세기의 시대적 배경과 맞물려 일본의 신화는 연구 대상으로서 큰 가치를 지니게 되었고, 이러한 과정을 거쳐 『고지키』는 현대에 이르러 일본문학사의 흐름 속에서 최고(最古)의 문학작품으로서의 위상을 가질 수 있었다.

注釈とは、意味の不明な語彙を分かりやすく説いたり、難解な語句などを詳細に考察して記したりした内容を指す。また、注釈は知らない過去の事柄について研究した結果をまとめたものであり、注釈作業は古典理解の方法を研究するための基礎的でかつ専門的な作業の一環と言える。 古典の内容を忠実に理解した上で注釈作業を通して研究を続けるのが、近世における国学の方法であり、これは仏教や儒教の理論を通しての古典の理解とは離れた方法といえる。近世の国学における古典とは記紀神話のことで、『古事記』が中心をなす神話注釈は、神話に対する従来の認識を大きく変えた。注釈を通じて古代の語彙を理解して神話の内容を把握できるようになり、その時代に適した神話の再創造が可能になった。 近世期の神話注釈は、記紀神話の位相の変化と近世神話の創造という、二つの側面から大きな意義を持つ。注釈作業と注釈書の執筆が求められた近世期の時代的背景とかみ合い、日本の神話は研究対象として大きな価値を抱くことになり、このような過程を経て『古事記』は現代に至って日本文学史の流れの中で最古の文学作品としての位相を持つことができたのである。
