The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of participation in the candlelight protest from 2016 to 2017 on citizenship (tolerance, trust, participation consciousness, community consciousness). Data collection was conducted on candlelight protest participants and non-participants. The analysis was conducted by setting other factors influencing citizenship as control variables. First, the result of analysis, it was found that participation in candlelight protest affected participation consciousness and community consciousness. Second, the perception that candlelight protest led to the resignation of the president positively affected the four civic characteristics. Third, socioeconomic variables, political association activities, voting activities, others and institutional credibility were the important factors influencing the four civic characteristics, and the influence of education was the strongest. Therefore, as the argument of the participating democracies, the civic education effect of participating in candlelight protest in 2016-2017 was confirmed, and the candlelight protest gave the opportunity to cultivate citizenship to both participants and non-participants.

이 연구의 목적은 2016-2017년 촛불집회 참여가 시민성(관용, 신뢰, 참여의식, 공동체 의식)에 미친 영향을 실증적으로 분석하는 것이다. 이러한 작업은 촛불집회 참여자를 실험집단으로 비참여자를 통제집단으로 선정하고, 시민성에 영향을 미치는 다른 요인을 통제변수로 설정하여 진행되었다. 분석결과에 의하면, 첫째, 촛불집회 참여가 참여의식과 공동체의식에 미친 영향력이 발견되었다. 둘째, 촛불집회가 박근혜 대통령의 퇴진을 이끌었다는 인식은 4가지 시민성에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 셋째, 사회경제적 변수와 정치적 결사체 참여, 투표활동, 타인 및 제도 신뢰 역시 시민성에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인이었고, 특히 교육 수준의 영향력이 가장 강하게 나타났다. 따라서 참여민주주의자들의 주장처럼 2016년-2017년 촛불집회 참여의 시민교육적 효과가 부분적으로 확인되었고, 대통령의 퇴진을 이끈 촛불집회는 그 자체로 참여자 및 비참여자 모두에게 시민성 함양의 계기를 제공하였다.
