Spying novel is one of subsections of detective novel. In South Korea, we do not usually use the word, as we usually try to include related genres in a big frame, “detection”. However, in North Korea, the word is often used to refer to “the thing with spying story or that kind of work”. It means “spying novel” is frequently produced in North Korea. According to the examination result, image medium, describing the genre of “spying novel” started in 1960 in North Korea. It represents that “spying novel” is fully set as a genre in North Korea and is produced in that history. succeeds in according with mass communications policy while including various characteristics of generic stories. It can be done thanks to distinct and contemporary characteristic of period before and after partition, time setting of the drama. Its contemporary characteristic is enough to represent the basic structure and characteristic of spying novel, dealing with enemy and detective and case and solution. It shows that it is enough for generic story to be maintained even though it excludes political factors, required by North Korea to media. The generic story can be recognized as the genre if it includes its own characteristic, regardless of border or politics. The event, that won the film festival, shows this result. Until now, most of studies on North Korean image medium have tried to illuminate its relatedness with politics or its own distinct characteristic. However, it is hard to find studies, trying to investigate them, while focusing on their genres. Even though some studies are related to genres but they are limited in literature and tried to do investigation by classifying them into genres in North Korea. However, it is hard to find investigation, fully focusing on image medium of North Korea. Genre has a characteristic that it exists beyond national boundaries. It is easy to find out that images including movie and drama are classified as a similar genre, regardless of boundaries. The conclusion that the study, focusing on image medium’s close relatedness with politics or excluding medium with no relatedness with politics, is highly impacted by prejudice, can be drawn. This paper sets as an object and investigates whether it has a distinct characteristic of North Korean image medium and features of detective story. According to the study, the conclusion that it has both of characteristics is drawn. This result proves that North Korean image medium can show generic feature, regardless of special political orientation. Especially, “spying story” utilizes the distinct characteristic to represent ideology and thought of North Korea. Based on this, it is expected that the study on North Korean genre, spying story, with long history, is continuously done, it can be extended to the study on detective stories, which have been done since before.

정탐물은 추리물에 속한 세부장르 중 하나다. 현재 우리나라에서는 관련장르를 ‘추리’라는 큰 틀로 포괄하는 경향이 강하기 때문에 자주 쓰이지 않는 말이기도 하다. 하지만 북한에서는 “정탐 사건을 주제로 하고 있는 것. 또는 그런 작품을 일상적으로 이르는 말”로 규정하여 널리 사용하고 있다. 이는 북한에서 ‘정탐물’이 다수 제작되고 있음을 의미한다. 실제 확인 결과북한에서 ‘정탐물’을 장르로 내세운 영상매체의 시작은 1960년대로 거슬러 올라가 찾아볼 수 있었다. 이는 북한에서의 ‘정탐물’이 하나의 장르로 온전하게 자리하고 있으며 그 역사 속에서 「방탄벽」이 제작되었음을 의미한다. 장르물의 다양한 특성을 내포하고 있는 와중에도 「방탄벽」은 북한의 언론정책에 부합하는 내용을 담아내는 데 성공했다. 드라마의 배경으로 설정된분단전후의 특수성과 시대성 때문에 가능한 결과다. 작품이 가진 시대성은적과 탐정, 사건과 해결이라는 정탐물의 기본구조이자 특성을 담아내는 데충분했다. 이와 같은 결과는 북한이 매체에 요구하는 정치적 요소들을 배제할지라도 장르물이 충분히 유지될 수 있음을 보여준다. 장르물은 국경이나 정치와관계없이 고유한 특성을 내포하고 있다면 해당 장르로 인정될 수 있다. 「방탄벽」의 영화제 수상이 이를 보여주는 결과라고 할 수 있다. 지금까지 북한 영상매체에 관한 연구는 대부분 북한의 정치와 연관되거나 북한만이 내포하고 있는 특징을 조명하려는 시도가 많았다. 하지만 이를장르와 연관해 연구하려는 시도는 쉽게 찾아보기 어렵다. 장르와 연관된 경우라도 문학에 한정되거나, 북한 내에서의 장르로 분류해 연구를 시도한 경우들을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 하지만 본격적으로 북한의 영상매체를 장르로 내세운 연구는 찾아보기 힘들었다. 장르는 국경을 초월해 존재한다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 영화와 드라마를포함한 영상의 경우에는 국경과 관계없이 유사한 형태로 장르를 구분하고있음을 쉽게 확인할 수 있기도 하다. 이러한 상황에서 북한의 영상매체가정치와 깊이 연관되어 있다거나, 단절되어 있다는 사실만으로 장르의 특성을 배제한 채 연구를 진행하는 것은 선입견의 영향이 크다는 결론을 얻을수 있었다. 본고는 드라마 「방탄벽」을 연구 대상으로 선정하고 이것이 북한 영상물의특수성과 정탐물의 특징을 모두 지니고 있는지를 확인하였다. 그 결과 두가지 요소를 모두 충족한다는 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 이와 같은 결과는 북한의 특수한 정치성향이 영상에 드러나는 것과 별개로 장르적 특수성이 부각될 수 있다는 사실을 증명하는 결과이기도 하다. 특히 ‘정탐물’의 경우에는 오히려 북한의 이념과 사상을 담아내는 데 그 특수성이 활용되는 모습을확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 오랜 역사를 지닌 북한의 정탐물에 대한 장르 연구가 진행된다면 기존에 진행되던 추리물 연구의 확장까지도 기대할 수있을 것으로 판단된다.
