This study aims to seek the direction of external space of public buildings to play its roles of public space in rural center through the survey of awareness of installation conditions and public interests of external space in public buildings with external spaces near welfare centers in Myeon units of rural areas. 8 typical types were extracted from 4 Myeon units with high aging index in Jeonnam region based on center index and population and four types were selected and evaluated by condition survey of welfare center location and external space. . As a result, external space of welfare center for social activities in rural area should ensure following conditions. First, construction of space to accommodate various activities not for parking in publicity should be ensured, users' participation related to planning should be induced, and active connectivity with adjacent streets should be ensured. Second, stability for using external space trough separation of sidewalk and road and pedestrian centered access not for vehicle should be ensured. Third, it was examined that construction design should be led by the integration or connection of similar or related facilities.

본 연구는 농촌지역 면소재지 내 복지센터의 입지와 가로에 면한 외부공간들을 대상으로 공공건축물 외부공간의 설치 현황 및 공익성에 대한 인식 조사를 통해 공공건축 외부공간이 농촌중심지 내 공공공간의 역할을 할 수 있는 방향성을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 전라남도 농촌 생활권별로 고령화 지수가 높은 지자체 4곳의 면소재지를 중심지 지수와 인구를 중심으로 8개 대표 유형을 추출한 후 복지센터의 입지 및 외부공간 현황조사에 의해 4개 대표 유형을 선정하여 평가하였다. 그 결과 농촌중심지내 사회적 활동의 중심이 되는 복지센터의 외부공간(전면공간)은 첫째, 공공성에 있어 주차중심이 아닌 다양한 활동을 수용할 수 있는 공간구성, 계획과 관련한 이용자의 참여, 인접가로에 대한 적극적 연계성 확보, 둘째, 접근성에 있어서는 외부공간의 보차분리를 통한 이용 안정성, 차량 접근 중심의 공간이 아닌 보행자 접근 중심의 접근 동선계획에 의한 외부공간구성, 셋째, 건축디자인 선도는 주변의 유사 및 관련 시설들과의 통합 또는 연계된 계획 중심의 디자인이 필요한 것으로 연구되었다.
