The present study focused on the sense of place over villages to shed a light on the process and aspect of developing the sense of place in students of lower grades as part of action research. The program for developing the sense of place mainly with village exploration activities, was developed based on the curriculum for action research. On the basis of Shamai's 7 scale, the themes of the first to third action programs were ‘Objective perception of a village’, ‘Perception of relationships with villagers’, and ‘Imparting a meaning to my village’, respectively. Based on the comparative analysis of results from learning activities and those of applying the instrument for measuring the sense of place, the program including village exploration enhanced students' sense of place. Also, the results of the study indicated the process of students's development of the sense of place and aspects of relevant changes.

본 연구는 마을에 대한 장소감에 초점을 두고 실행 연구의 방법으로 저학년 학생들의 장소감 발달 과정과 양상을 파악하고자 한 것이다. 특히 교육과정에 바탕을 두고 마을 탐사 활동을 중심으로 한 장소감 발달 프로그램을 구안하여 실행연구를 실시하였다. 장소감 발달 프로그램은 Shamai의 장소감 발달 단계에 입각하여 각 실행 프로그램의 주제를 ‘마을의 객관적 인식’, ‘마을 사람들과의 관계성 인식’, ‘우리 마을에 대한 의미 부여’로 설정하여 구성하였다. 장소감 측정 도구의 적용 결과와 프로그램을 통한 학습 활동의 결과물들을 비교 분석한 결과, 학생들의 장소감 이해 정도가 향상되었음을 확인할 수 있었고, 저학년 학생들의 장소감 발달 과정과 그 변화 양상을 파악해볼 수 있었다.
