The purpose of this study is to discover the conceptual profiles of Korean SADNESS expressions, sulphum(‘슬픔’), seleum(‘서러움’), and han(‘한’), based on their usage patterns. Quantitative corpus-based methodology (Glynn 2014b, Krawczak 2014) is employed: Data are extracted from Sejong Corpus with their contexts and annotated for their behaviour; With the aid of correspondence analysis, usage patterns across the data are identified; The descriptive accuracy of the result is confirmed by testing its predictive power. It is revealed that the three lexical categories show different usage patterns regarding when the cause of the emotion occurs, whether the emotion is expressed outwardly and whether the cause is internal or external: Sulphum profiles the non-specific time of the cause, not-expressing –the-emotion, and the external cause; Seleum profiles the present time of the cause, expressing-the-emotion, and the internal cause: Han profiles the past or past-to-present time of the cause, but neither expressing-the-emotion nor the internal cause.
