This paper investigates factors that influence Korean immigrants’ start-up decisions. In the past research about immigrant start-ups and entrepreneurship has been done from geographical and demographic perspectives, and was mostly centered around self-employed small businesses. This paper considers immigrant start-up as entrepreneurship overseas, and analyzes the key factors of entrepreneurship in terms of entrepreneurial, internal, and external environmental factors. Recently, there’s been a lot of concern for Korean start-up’s in the United States due to Trump administration’s anti-immigration laws and administrative orders which do not favor immigrants. Research showed that there were concerns of difficulties in employment within self-employed business sector, and there were predictions of damage in business sectors near or reliant on Mexico. However, IT and BT related business sectors have little impact; instead there is a potential for growth in the future, allowing this research to conclude that there would be high success rate of start-ups within the IT and BT fields. This research has significance in considering existing immigrant start-up as over seas entrepreneurship, conducted case study around different types of business, and was conducted in San Diego, California which is under political risk due to the current Trump administration. However, this research remains as a future research project, due to the fact that this was conducted in a single location, and the fact that there could be more cases.

본 연구는 미국에 이민한 한인들의 창업을 결정하는 요인이 무엇인지를 살펴보고 창업결정에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 통해 실제 해외 창업을 앞두고 있는 예비창업자들에게 도움이 되고자 하였다. 기존의 이민자 창업에 대한 연구는 주로 지리적이고 인구사회학적인 관점에서 이루어졌고 자영업에 편중되었지만 본 연구는 이민자 창업을 해외창업 형태로 간주하고 가장 유사한 개념인 본 글로벌 기업의 관점에서 살펴보았다. 본 글로벌 기업의 결정요인인 경영자 측면, 기업 내부요인, 외부환경요인으로 명제를 검증하고 법적 신분, 정부정책 변화 등 이민자라는 특수한 상황에서 겪을 수 있는 요인들을 추가로 검증하였다. 최근 미국은 트럼프 정부가 출범하고 반이민법 등 이민자들에게 불리한 행정명령이 시행되고 있어 한인들의 미국 창업에 대해 많은 우려가 나타나고 있다. 연구결과 창업자의 글로벌기업가정신, 합법적 신분 등은 필수적인 요소였으며, 업체의 전문성이나 차별화전략, 네트워크, 시장경쟁강도, 정부지원책들은 창업에 필수적이거나 큰 영향을 미치는 요소는 아니었다. 또한, 미국 정부의 반이민법 행정명령은 일부 불법체류자나 기업에게 해당할 뿐 일반적인 사항은 아니었다. 본 연구는 기존의 이민자 창업을 해외창업의 형태로 간주했다는 점, 정치적 위험이 있는 현 트럼프 정부에서 남 캘리포니아 지역 샌디에이고를 실제사례로 연구하였다는 점, 그리고 각기 다른 업종을 연구하여 예비창업자들에게 다양한 정보를 제공했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 한 지역만을 다뤘고, 케이스가 많지 않았다는 점, 객관적인 데이터 분석이 아닌 사례분석으로만 다뤘다는 점이 한계점으로 남고 향후 연구과제로 남는다.
