Although the history of domestic alternative spaces is relatively shorter than that of overseas, they had secured alternative function to support rising artists and embrace experimental arts continuously. However, differentiated function of alternative spaces has been shrunk gradually as art museums or commercial galleries are also embracing exhibition planning and experimental works for rising artists not only through financial support but through support for working spaces through a residence program recently. Despite the number of general public’s viewing of exhibition and interest in arts has increased, awareness of alternative spaces still remains low and discussion on the identity of the spaces titled alternativeness is also insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to re-search independent function and identity of domestic alternative spaces, and suggest a plan for revitalization. For the foregoing, this study compared the birth background of domestic and overseas alternative spaces and suggested function of domestic alternative spaces as supporting rising artists, embracing experimental works, seeking diversity, non-commerciality breaking from commerciality etc. In addition, this study also suggested problems of alternative spaces such as role identity, difficulty in securing finances, lacking in affinity with general public etc. based on the present condition of representative domestic alternative spaces like alternative spaces LOOP, Art Space POOL, Audio Visual Pavilion and Common Center. For the aforementioned, this study emphasized that re-search of identity of domestic alternative spaces and changes in experimental communication through specialization of genre, long-term support for alternative spaces, popular·friendly culture and arts participation program are inevitable.

국내 대안공간은 국외의 대안공간에 비해 비교적 짧은 역사를 갖고 있지만, 신진 작가를 지원하고 실험적인 미술을 수용하는 대안적 기능을 지속적으로 확보해 오고 있었다. 그러나 최근 미술관이나 상업 갤러리에서 레지던스 프로그램을 통해 경제적 지원 뿐 아니라 작업공간을 지원하는 등 신진작가를 위한 전시기획과 실험적 작품을 수용해 가면서 기존의 대안공간만이 가지고 있던 차별적인 기능은 위축되고 있다. 또한 대중들의 전시 관람횟수 증가와 예술에 대한 관심이 증대되었음에도 불구하고 대안공간에 대한 인지도는 여전히 낮으며 대안성이라는 공간만의 정체성 논의 역시 부족한 실정이다. 이 연구의 목적은 국내 대안공간의 독자적인 기능과 정체성을 재탐색하고 대안성에 대한 공간적 기능과 주체인식, 공간활용의 예술적 진화를 위한 안을 제안하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 대안공간이 발생된 배경을 국내외 비교하였으며, 국내 대안공간의 기능을 신진작가 지원, 실험적 작품의 수용과 다양성 추구, 상품성으로터 벗어나는 비영리성 등으로 제시하였다. 또한 본 연구는 대안공간 루프(Alternative Space LOOP), 아트 스페이스 풀(Art Space POOL), 시청각(Audio Visual Pavilion), 커먼센터(Common Center) 등 대표적인 국내 대안공간의 현황을 토대로 대안공간의 역할 정체성, 재정적 충원의 어려움, 대중과의 친화성 부족 등의 문제점을 제시하였다. 이에 대하여 본 연구는 장르 특성화와 전문화, 장기적 지원을 이끌어내기 위한 홍보와 담론형성, 지역연계의 대중적· 친화적 문화예술 참여 프로그램 등을 통해 국내 대안공간의 정체성에 대한 재탐색과 실험적 소통의 변화가 불가피하다는 것을 강조하였다.
