The present is an era where fundamental questions about ‘what is a human being’ are becoming increasingly inextricable due to the loss of humanity, human alienation and materialism. More than ever, human beings are required to be human beings and to have true personality. In the unification thoughts, human beings are known to improve and grow, being a mathematical completion entity through the period of growth. The goal of human life is to accomplish the three promises that God has blessed: ‘Be fruitful and multiply and rule over all things (Gen. 1:28).’ In order for humans to achieve and complete the three greatest blessings, it is necessary to fulfill the commandment, that is, to share the burden of responsibility, “Do not eat from the tree of good and evil”. Human beings have to fulfill their responsibilities according to their own free will along with the completion of the self-righteousness as man grows up in the shape of God's divine, which is oriented to the 4 Great Realms of Heart. The purpose of this study is to provide a foundation for understanding the meaning of ‘growth’ to those who practice faith as the task of life as ‘the way to become true children of God’. For this purpose, the implication of ‘growth’ used in unification thoughts is examined by Fowler’s Faith Development and Richard Niebuhr's ‘The Responsible Self’. Fowler divided the stages of faith development into six stages, each of which is hierarchically and continuously related. The stages are developed and integrated in a synergistic order, however they do not go up automatically over time. They appear as mature faith expressions, which are beyond the form of logic, the ability to perform roles, the position of authority, the scope of social awareness and the form of moral judgement. Richard H. Niebuhr develops the theme of ‘responsible self’ and explores the underlying patterns and types of community life and conduct in the moral realm. Discussing as a problem, the thoughts and behaviors that conform to the character of the human community in front of the Absolute God. Richard Niebuhr distinguished between responsiveness, interpretation, accountability, and social solidarity, which constitute the concept of responsibility. The “ethics of response” developed by Richard Niebuhr suggests the direction of the effort to achieve the integrity. Fowler’s six stages of faith development theory is based on the development and completion of the four great realms of heart in the unification thoughts. Niebuhr' s ‘The Responsible Self’ can be understood as having the qualification for self-control, establishment of the family and all things subjectivity through the completion of responsibility sharing. In the concept of ‘growth’ mentioned in the unification thoughts, it is confirmed that it is demanding the responsibility in the relation between oneself, others, and all things, including the relationship with God and the development of faith. The review of the implications of the concept of ‘growth’ in the unification thoughts is expected to contribute to the human endeavor to achieve the integrity.

현대는 인간성 상실과 인간 소외, 물질만능주의 속에 불평등이 만연하면서 ‘인 간은 무엇인가’에 대한 근본적 질문이 더욱 부각되고 있는 시대이다. 그 어느 때 보다 인간다운 인간, 참된 인격을 갖춘 인간이 요청된다. 통일사상에서는 인간은 성장기간을 통해 수리적인 완성실체가 되는 ‘성장’하는 존재로 이해한다. 인간이 가야할 길이자 삶의 목표는 하나님이 ‘생육하고 번성하여 만물을 주관하라(창 1:28)’고 축복한 세 가지 약속을 성취하는 일이다. 인간이 3대축복을 성취하고 완성하기 위해서는 성장기간을 거치면서 ‘선악과를 따먹지 말라’는 계명, 즉 주어 진 책임분담을 완수해야한다. 인간은 하나님의 신상(神相)과 신성(神性)을 닮아 성장하면서 심정의 일체를 지향하는 사대심정권의 완성과 더불어 인간 자신의 자유의지에 따른 책임분담을 다해야 한다. 본 연구는 ‘하나님의 참자녀가 되는 길’을 일생의 과제로 삼고 신앙생활을 하 는 사람들에게 ‘성장’의 의미를 더 깊이 이해할 수 있는 기초를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 파울러의 ‘신앙발달’과 리차드 니버의 ‘책임적 자아’의 이 론을 살펴보면서, 심정권의 발달과 책임분담의 완수를 중심으로 통일사상에서 사 용하는 ‘성장’ 개념이 갖는 함의를 고찰하였다. 파울러는 신앙발달 단계를 6단계로 구분하였는 데 각 단계는 위계적이고도 연속적으로 서로 관련을 갖고 있다. 그 단계들은 상승적인 순서로 발전하고 통합되지만 시간이 지나면 자동으로 올라가 는 것이 아니라 논리의 형태, 역할 수행능력, 권위의 위치, 사회적 자각들의 범 위, 도덕적 판단의 형태 등을 넘어서면서 성숙한 신앙의 표현으로 나타나게 된 다. 리차드 니버는 ‘책임적 자아’라는 주제를 발전시키면서 도덕적 영역에서의 공 동체의 삶과 행위의 근본적인 양태와 유형, 즉 절대자 하나님 앞에 있는 인간의 공동체로서의 특성에 일치하는 사유와 행위방식을 드러내주는 과제를 가지고 논 의하였다. 리차드 니버는 책임의 개념을 구성하는 요소를 응답, 해석, 책무, 사회 적 연대로 구분하였다. 니버가 발전시킨 “응답의 윤리”는 온전성을 성취하고자 하는 노력의 방향성을 제시해 준다. 파울러의 6단계 신앙발달이론은 통일사상에서 4대심정권의 발달과 완성으로, 니버의 ‘책임적 자아’ 이론은 책임분담의 완성을 통해 자기주관과 가정완성, 그리 고 만물주관에 대한 자격을 갖는 것으로 비교하여 이해할 수 있다. 통일사상에서 언급하는 ‘성장’의 개념에는 심정을 터로 한 신앙적 발달과 하나님과의 관계를 비롯해서 자기 자신과 타인, 그리고 만물과의 관계에서 책임을 요구하고 있음을 확인하였다. 통일사상의 ‘성장’ 개념의 함의에 대한 이러한 고찰은 온전성을 성취 하려는 인간의 노력에 도움을 줄 것으로 기대한다.
