This is a study of acceptance of Western novels in modern Japan, focusing on Ruiko and Rampo's "Hakuhatsuki". Ruiko adapted "Vendetta" to emphasize the necessity of social justice and he thought out some good ways of publishing serially in a newspaper. He removed some parts which don't correspond to poetical justice, which severely look down on women and which describe author's private opinions. Rampo thought that Ruiko's adaptation was difficult to read and monotonous, so he tried to adapt in more modern and extraordinary style. He fearlessly removed or added the story in order to be full of ups and downs. Moreover, he added the bizarre description which matches with the early Showa era.
