The philosophical investigation on the inherent identity of Suncheon Bay National Garden (SBNG) should be centered on the pursuit of ecological life. This pursuit is the reason for the establishment of SBNG. According to G. Böhme, the value of ecological life can reveal its significance when it comes to ecoaesthetic views. The ecoaesthetic perspective refers to the view that humans experience and see nature, feeling through their bodies the fact that humans are supposed to live in nature and with nature. The reason why this view is necessary is that the ecological life often changes into a life that depends on the results of natural sciences, contrary to the original intention. In summary, the philosophical investigation on the inherent identity of SBNG should be done, based upon the ecoaesthetic viewpoint. In this context, the core of the inherent identity of SBNG is as follows: The inherent identity of SBNG is primarily validated through the asymmetric coexistence of the Suncheon Lake Garden and the world gardens around it. The nature that we experience in SBNG is to unfold in front of us like landscapes (like nature in the English gardens spoken by Böhme). The natural beauty in SBNG is not the beauty that can be only experienced by a specific person, but the one that opens up to anyone who visits there. More important, however, the inherent identity of SBNG can be fundamentally revealed when the area of SBNG extends to Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve. It can be sure via Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve that SBNG is entitled to be called the space where people living around Suncheon Bay ecoaesthetically feel and see nature every day. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately understand the relation between SBNG and Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve in a discourse of humanities on SBNG. Otherwise, it could be a factor inadvertently undermining the inherent identity of the SBNG or the existence of the SBNG in itself.

순천만국가정원(이하 순천만정원)의 고유성에 대한 철학적 고찰은 생태적 삶의 추구 라는 가치를 중심에 놓고 이루어져야 한다. 순천만 정원이 생겨난 이유가 거기에 있기 때문이다. 그런데 뵈메(G. Böhme)에 따르면, 생태적 삶의 추구라는 가치는 생태미학적 (ecoaesthetic) 관점을 취할 때 그 의의가 제대로 드러날 수 있다. 생태미학적 관점이란 우리가 ‘인간은 자연 속에서 자연과 함께 살아가야 하는 존재’라는 사실을 몸으로 감지하 는 가운데 자연을 경험하고 더 나아가 자연을 바라보는 관점을 의미한다. 이러한 관점이 필요한 이유는 그렇지 않을 경우, 생태적 삶을 추구하는 것이 그 의도와 달리 종종 일상 의 삶과 동떨어진 자연과학적 성과물에 의존하는 삶을 사는 것으로 변질될 가능성이 크기 때문이다. 요컨대 순천만 정원의 고유성에 대한 철학적 고찰은 생태미학적 관점에 서 이루어져야 한다. 이와 같은 입장에서 순천만정원의 고유한 정체성을 언급해 보자면 그 핵심은 다음과 같다. 순천만 정원은 세계 정원 구역의 중심에 위치한 순천 호수 정원과 그것을 둘러싼 세계 정원들의 비대칭적 공존 속에서, 또 동천을 중심으로 동·서로 구분되는 영역의 비대칭적 공존 속에서 생태적 삶의 의미를 감지하게 해주는 데서 일차적으로 그 고유성 이 확인된다. 이와 같은 순천만정원에서 경험하게 되는 자연은 뵈메가 말하는 영국정에서 경험되는 자연과 마찬가지로 풍경처럼 우리 앞에 펼쳐진다. 그곳에서 경험하게 되 는 자연미는 특정인에게만 국한된 것이 아니다. 그것은 그곳을 방문한 사람 누구에게나 개방된 자연미다. 그렇지만 이보다 더 중요한 것은 순천만 정원을 순천만 습지까지 확장 해서 파악할 때 그곳의 고유한 정체성이 제대로 드러날 수 있다는 사실이다. 순천만정원 은 순천만 습지를 매개로 해서만 ‘순천만 사람들이 일상의 삶 속에서 생태미학적 자연을 경험하는 공간’에 포함될 수 있기 때문이다. 이런 까닭에 순천만정원에 관한 인문학적 논의를 하고자 할 경우 순천만정원과 순천만 습지간의 매개적 관계를 잘 숙지하고 할 필요가 있다. 그렇지 않을 경우 그 논의가 부지불식간에 순천만정원의 고유한 정체성을 훼손하거나 혹은 순천만정원의 존립 자체를 어렵게 하는 요인이 될 수 있다.
