Throughout modern history, Koreans residing in Japan have been called by names such as Japan-residing Hankookin, Japan-residing Josonin, Japan-residing Overseas Compatriot, Japan-residing Hanin, Japan-residing Hankook Josonin, Japan-residing Korean, etc. These names have been given either by the Korean-Japanese themselves, the Korean or Japanese people, as well as the governments of Korea and Japan. These names often stress their affiliation with state, nation, or sometimes both. However, in some cases, the names, as given by the Korean-Japanese themselves, show an attempt to hide or delete such affiliations. The current paper examines the reasons behind such attempts and the phraseology of the terms that are used. The author investigates the points of conflicts and disputes in the phraseology in the context of their historical consequence and contemporary status. This work will show how various ways of phrasing the Korean-Japanese identity have been closely connected to the political and historical conditions on Korean Peninsula. Such political and historical conditions have decided how Korean and Japanese people and their respective governments have represented Koreans in Japan. These conditions, in turn, affected the perception of self-identity among the Koreans in Japan. Hence, the implications of current status of phraseology should also be duly considered in the context of its historical consequence.

재일한인, 재일동포, 재일한국인, 재일조선인, 재일한국조선인, 재일조선한국인, 재일, 재일 코리안(コリアン), 재일한인, 재일교포 등 ‘재일-’ 이주자들을 지칭하는 어휘는 다양하다. 때로는 국가, 때로는 민족 혹은 양자를 표상하거나 지우는 방식으로 만들어진 호칭들의 의 미와 혼란은 어디에 기인한 것일까? 본 연구는 재일동포 등의 호칭을 둘러싼 갈등의 지점과 쟁점들을 살펴보고, 이러한 어휘 등 장과 사용의 역사적 배경이 무엇인지를 당사자, 정부, 한국과 일본의 사회, 관련 연구자들 이 이들에게 부여하는 호칭들의 의미, 호칭 등장의 역사적 배경, 호칭을 둘러싼 긴장 등을 검토한다. 이를 통해, 다양한 호칭들 속에서 민족과 국가가 표상되는 방식은 식민지 이후 한반도를 둘 러싼 정치적・역사적 조건들과 결부되어 있다는 점을 드러내고자 하였다. 이러한 정치적・ 역사적 조건들은 한국과 일본 사회가 이들의 존재를 어떻게 표상하는지뿐만 아니라 당사 자들이 자신의 정체성을 이해하고 위치 짓는 자기 해석의 과정과도 무관하지 않다. 따라서 각각의 호칭이 담고 있는 현재적 함의와 인식은 그 역사성과 함께 고려되어야 할 것이다.
