This paper sheds light on the rise of the Chinese economy as one of the G-2 members in the 21st century, and further inspects the so called ‘China Risk’ and ‘Chinese Threat to Japan’ arguments in terms of economic perspective. First of all, it is confirmed that the Chinese economy may fall into the middle-income trap mainly due to their firms’ low-level technology, low fertility rates, population aging, and wage push. However, it is shown that ‘Chinese threat to Japan’ in terms of economic perspective may not be as serious as it is expected. Recently, ‘Chinese Threat to Japan’ has been realized in a series of diplomatic episodes such as Japanese government’s suspension of ODA commitments to China, and Japan-China conflicts over natural resource development in East China Sea. Notwithstanding these diplomatic conflicts between Japan and China, there is no evidence that Chinese firms dominate Japanese domestic markets or the growing increase of Japanese firms’ FDI into China cause deindustrialization of Japan. These findings imply that the Japan-China economic relationship should be considered as mutually complementary, rather than incompatible.

본고는 2000년대 이후 중국경제의 위상이 G-2로 격상되었음을 확인하고, 일본 내에 서 제기되고 있는 중국리스크와 중국위협론을 주로 경제 측면에서 검증하고 있다. 중 국리스크란 중국이 지금과 같은 고도의 경제성장을 지속할 수는 없을 것이라는 주장 인데, 본고는 현재 중국기업의 기술수준이나 저출산・고령화라는 인구구조의 변화, 그 리고 농촌인구의 도시유입 한계에 따른 임금상승 등을 고려하면, 중국이 ‘중진국의 덫’ 에 빠질 가능성이 있음을 확인한다. 그런데 중국의 부상은 일본에게 군사적 측면은 물 론이고 경제적 측면에서도 커다란 불안요소라는 중국위협론에 대해서는 다소 부정적 인 전망을 제시하고 있다. 즉, 2000년대 들어 발생한 ODA 공여중단이나 동중국해를 둘러싼 일중 간 자원개발 분쟁, 그리고 희토류를 둘러싼 자원분쟁을 보면, 중국위협론 은 분명 ‘실체’가 존재한다고 할 수 있으나, 경제적 측면에서 보면 일본이 국내시장을 중국에 내주고 있다든지 일본기업의 대중 직접투자 급증으로 일본 국내에 산업공동화 가 심화되고 있다든지 등의 근거는 발견하지 못하였다. 이와 같은 사실에 비춰 볼 때, 일중 경제관계는 상호보완관계로 인식해야 한다는 게 본고의 주장이다.
