Dokkaebi is a mythical creature that lives in the imagination of Korean fairy tales. But the academia and, the mass media as well have criticized it, of which the visual representation has not traditionally identified with the Korean Dokkaebi, but with Japanese one, the Oni. This picture book study is envisaged as an enterprise critically observing its actual visual representation(2013-2016) after these doubtful public comments. The observation method is based on a comparative and historical description of Dokkaebi and Oni and intended to engage in exegesis of their various figures in picture books. The results show that the mis-representation problems are taken up again on the level of visual representation but with some moderated expressions between the two, which show a slice but positive movement of creation. The results lead us to the predictions on its visual representation as following; 1) to represent Dokkaebi in just the way it used to be 2) to represent Dokkaebi in the way it converses with the Oni 3) to represent Dokkaebi in the absolute new way. The visual representation of Dokkaebi in on the period of transition which shows some positive aspects so as to make possible the predictions.

도깨비는 한국의 설화와 민담을 통해 전해 내려온 상상 속의 존재이다. 그러나 우리가 접하는 현대 도깨비의 모습은 한국의 것이 아닌 일본 요괴인 오니의 형상이다. 이에 학술연구와 미디어에서 도깨비의 왜곡된 정체성에 대한 이의를 제기한 바 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 이의가 제기된 후, 2013년과 2016년 사이 출간된 어린이 그림책을 대상으로 어린이 그림책속의 도깨비의 시각적 표현이 어떤 경향을 보이고 있는지 분석하였다. 연구 방법으로 먼저 선행 연구를 바탕으로 도깨비와 오니의 성격적, 외형적 차이를 파악한 후 이를 기준으로 어린이 그림책 속 도깨비의 시각 표현의 성향을 분류·분석하였다. 연구 대상으로는 국립어린이청소년도서관의 어린이 서고에 비치된 그림책 중‘도깨비’를 키워드로 하여 검색되는 단행본으로 하였다. 이 중 도깨비의 모습을 시각화하여 표현한 일러스트레이션이 포함된 그림책에 한하였다. 연구 결과, 한국 그림책 속의 도깨비는 일본의 오니의 모습으로 표현되는 경우가 가장 많은 것으로 파악되었으며 도깨비와 오니가 혼합된 형태의 도깨비나 한국 민담의 도깨비와 같이 사람의 모습을 닮은 도깨비의 표현도 낮지 않은 비율을 나타냈다. 이는 그림책 시장에서 도깨비를 표현함에 있어 긍정적인 변화의 움직임이 있음을 보여준다. 예측 가능한 도깨비의 시각화의 경향은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 민담의 도깨비와 같이 사람의 모습으로 도깨비로 표현하는 것 둘째, 기존의 오니와 한국 도깨비의 모습을 섞은 중간적인 표현의 시도 셋째, 기존에 없던 완전히 새로운 모습의 도깨비를 창작하는 것이다. 현재 그림책 속 한국 도깨비의 시각화는 그 정체성을 찾아가는 과도기적 단계이다.
