This paper is to study the principles of Middle Way, Avatamsaka and Seon which are main principles of Buddhism through MaeDeup(Knots) artwork. MaeDeup(Knots) is deeply connected with the Buddhist principles in its patterns and skills. This study covers the following three Buddhist principles related with MaeDeup(Knots). Firstly, the figurative forms of MaeDeup(Knots) which is interweaved toward the center without leaning to one side are related to the principle of Middle Way. Secondly, Kookhwa-maedeup(chrysanthemum knot) can be analyzed by the main principle of the Avatamsaka thoughts, this is, the ten mysterious dependent origination theory. Thirdly, the transmission of traditional MaeDeup(Knots) handicraft is achieved not through form or text, but through master-pupul relationship such as No-asserting scriptures or the communion of heart with heart of Seon(Zen). This study made it possible to expand the meanings of MaeDeup(Knots) which has been chiefly considered as traditional handicraft products. This kind of attempt is also to show that esthetics of Dharma-Beauty where phenomenon and reality do not exist separately is applied to MaeDeup(knots) artwork. In addition, this paper dealing with humanities and arts like Buddhism and MaeDeup(Knots) will be a good example in an age requiring fusion research between studies.

본 연구는 매듭이라는 조형물을 통해 불교의 주요 원리인 중도와 화엄, 선의 원리를 고찰한 것이다. 매듭은 그 문양과 기법에서 불교 원리와 심도 있게 연관되어 있으며, 본 연구에서는 다음의 세 가지를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 첫째 어느 한쪽으로 치우치지 않고 항상 중심을 향해 엮여져 있는 매듭의 조형적 형태에 중도의 원리가 작용하고 있으며, 둘째 국화매듭의 조형적 특성을 통해 화엄의 원리인 십현연기의 의미를 살펴보았으며, 셋째 매듭의 전승은 틀이나 교본에 의해서가 아니라 선의 불립문자나 이심전심처럼 사자상승 방식으로 전수된다는 점이다. 이러한 불교 원리적 고찰을 통해 단순히 전통공예품으로 인식되어온 매듭의 의미가 더욱 풍부하게 드러날 수 있었다. 이러한 시도는 현상과 실재가 별개로 존재하는 것이 아니라는 법미(法美)의 미학이 매듭 조형에 그대로 나타남을 보여주는 것이다. 아울러 융합적 연구가 요구되는 시대에 불교와 매듭이라는 인문과 예술의 학제 간 연구를 도모하는 이 연구의 시도가 좋은 사례가 되기를 기대한다.
