In 1950s temporary division of Korea became permanent following the Korean War, and the South Korean government established an ideology of anti-communism to infuse anti-communist sentiments across social and cultural spectrum. With this historical background, this study investigated the discourse of anti-communism in 1950s magazines which were accessible media to a general audience. For this, the situation of publishing magazines in this period was examined, and copyright papers together with editorials of first issues of 380 magazines launched in 1950s were analyzed. Analysis shows that only 74 magazines contained “Our Oaths” fixed by the Publication Registration Law at that time and there are 13 magazines including anti-communism texts. It is confirmed that magazine publishers were reluctant to accommodate the requirement of the government on the anti-communism. The first reason is that there existed the freedom of press against pressure from the government at that time. Second, the government’s demand was not widely accepted by the public and the intellectual. In conclusion, it is understood that Korean government intended to heighten the anti-communist sentiment in the political culture of the 1950s, while anti-communism was far from public interest with the sprouting democracy in the society.

1950년대는 6․25 전쟁을 겪으며 분단이 고착화된 시기였고 이에 따라 정부는 반공이데올로기를 국시로 삼으며 사회․문화 전반에 반공의 기류를 형성하고 반공사상을 주입시키고자 하였다. 이 논문은 이러한 시대적 배경을 바탕으로 일반 대중이 쉽게 접할 수 있었던 매체인 잡지에서의 반공담론을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 1950년대의 잡지 간행의 상황을 고찰하고 특히 1950년대 잡지의 창간호 380종을 대상으로 판권지와 창간사를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 당시 출판등록법에 규정되어 있던 ‘우리의 맹세’가 수록된 잡지는 74종에 불과하였으며 창간사에서 반공과 관련된 내용을 수록한 잡지는 13종이었다. 이를 통하여 잡지도 기존 반공 관련 예술장르의 경향과 유사하게 반공에 대한 국가적 요구 수용에 있어서는 소극적이었던 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그 원인으로는 첫째, 일반적인 통념과 다르게 당시 사회적 분위기는 정부의 압력에 항거할 수 있는 언론의 자유가 존재했고 둘째, 대중들과 지식인들의 호응을 얻어내지 못했던 것으로 파악된다. 결과적으로 1950년대는 반공을 국시로 내세우며 반공문화를 형성하고자 하였지만 국내에는 이미 민주주의적 환경이 싹트고 있었고 대중들의 관심 역시 반공과는 거리가 있었던 것을 확인할 수 있다.
