Visual communication design environment has witnessed rapid changes amid advancement of digital technology. Thus, this study was intended to analyze graphic elements and patterns manifesting the characteristics of digital technology so as to expand practical application and deepen the boundaries of academic knowledge in the field of design. Chapter 1 defined the scope and methodology of this study and Chapter 2 presented discussions on theoretical foundation from the prism of media technology, graphic format, and digital technology characteristics. Chapter 3 also presented a review of the Korea Design Exhibition and trends of prize-winning works in respective fields, followed by the analysis on type of works recognized with prizes awarded by heads or higher-ranking officials of organizations in the category of visual communication design from the 12th event held in 1977 to the 50th event held in 2015, along with sampling of 293 works as subjects. Chapter 4 presented an analysis of graphical elements manifesting the characteristics of digital technology based on 3 periods and discussed the pattern of such manifestation. Consequently, the graphic elements in which the characteristics of digital technology had been expressed were classified into ① construction by dot, ② use of geometric figures, ③ conversion of print types into image, ④ image superimposition, ⑤ image rendered by lines, ⑥ variety of image orientation, ⑦ image reversal, ⑧ identical shape repetition and variable expression, ⑨ increase of photograph use, ⑩ increase of number of letters, ⑪ decrease of traditional image, etc. in 4.1. In addition, the expressive patterns of digital technology characteristics were discussed based on ① detailed reconfiguration, ② convergence to simplified reconfigurability, ③ diversification of forms by mathematical control, ④ diversification of imaginary systems, ⑤ transition from visual communication design to communication design, etc. in 4.2.In this way, the researchers analyzed and discussed the expression of the graphic elements of the digital technology characteristics that manifestoed in prize-winning works of Visual communication design in the Korea design Exhibition. I hope that this research will to expand practical application and deepen the boundaries of academic knowledge in the field of design.

디지털기술이 발달하면서 시각디자인 환경은 급변하고 있다. 따라서 연구자는 디지털기술 특성이 발현(發顯)된 그래픽적 요소와 양상을 분석해 디자인 분야의 실무 활용성과 학문적 깊이를 더해보고자 했다. 1장에서는 연구범위 및 방법을 한정하고, 2장에서 이론적 토대를 ‘미디어 기술과 그래픽형식’, ‘디지털기술 특성’으로 나누어 논하였다. 3장에서는 대한민국디자인전람회 고찰과 분야별 수상작 흐름을 논한 후, 12회(1977년)∼50회(2015년) 사이 시각디자인 분야 기관장급 이상 수상작의 유형 분석 및 293점의 연구대상을 표집 하였다. 4장에서는 연구대상을 세 시기로 나누어 디지털기술 특성이 발현된 그래픽적 요소를 분석하고 그 발현 양상을 논했다.그 결과로서 4.1절에서 ‘디지털기술 특성이 발현된 그래픽적 요소’를 ① 점에 의한 축조, ② 기하 도형의 사용, ③ 활자의 이미지화, ④ 이미지 중첩, ⑤ 선에 의한 이미지, ⑥ 이미지 방위(方位)의 다양성, ⑦ 이미지 역전, ⑧ 동형반복과 가변적 표현, ⑨ 사진사용의 증가, ⑩ 글자 수의 증가, ⑪ 전통적 이미지의 감소 등으로 나누어 논하였다. 더불어 4.2절에서는 ‘디지털기술 특성이 발현된 양상’을 ① 디테일한 재구성, ② 재구성 쉬움으로의 수렴, ③ 수리적 제어에 의한 형식의 다양화, ④ 상상계의 다양화, ⑤ 시각디자인에서 커뮤니케이션디자인으로 변화 등으로 논하였다. 이처럼 연구자는 대한민국디자인전람회 시각디자인 분야 수상작에 나타난 디지털기술 특성이 발현된 그래픽적 요소를 분석하고 논의해 그 양상을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구가 디자인 분야의 실무 활용성과 학문적 깊이를 더할 것으로 기대한다.
