This study conducted a quasi-experiment to investigate if savoring a pleasant travel experience in the past improves subjective well-being. After a repeated measures ANOVA analysis with longitudinal data this study found that travel could enhance subjective well-being in the long-term by recall intervention, which is repetitive reminiscing of a prior pleasant travel experience. The savoring effect of travel was at least partially based on affective SWB. However, the effect was limited to people with a greater savoring ability and exists only during the period of reminiscing. Specifically, the results of this study indicated that savoring a previous pleasant travel experience was more effective at improving affect balance than savoring any other experience. The result of the study also improved our understanding of the global benefits of tourism since increasing individuals’ SWB could create substantial non-economic value.

이 연구는 유사실험 연구방법을 이용해 과거의 즐거웠던 여행 경험을 향유하는 것이 개인의 주관적인 웰빙(subjective well-being)을 증진시킬 수 있는지를 확인하기위해 수행되었다. 과거 즐거웠던 경험을 반복 회상하게 하는 회고중재기법을 사용해수집한 종적자료를 반복측정 분산분석한 결과, 장기적인 관점에서 여행이 개인의 주관적 웰빙을 증가시킨다는 사실이 확인되었다. 여행을 향유하는 것이 최소한 부분적으로는 정서적 주관적인 웰빙 증진에 효과적이라고 나타났다. 그러나 이러한 효과는 향유하는 기간 동안에만 나타났고 향유하는 능력이 큰 사람에 한해서만 나타나고 있었다. 또한 이 연구의 결과는 과거의 즐거웠던 여행경험을 향유하는 것이 다른 유형의 경험을 향유하는 것보다 정서적 균형(Affect Balance)을 증진시키는데 더 효과적이라는점을 시사하고 있다. 여행이 개인의 주관적 웰빙증진에 효과가 있다는 이 연구의 결과는 현재까지 진행된 관광의 경제적 가치에 더해 관광의 비경제적 가치에 대한 이해를높여 궁극적으로는 관광의 총체적 효과를 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다.
