This paper presents an arrangement of processes involved in the publication of A Collection of the Great Master Baek Yong-Seong, which was published through the investigation, collection, identification, and systematic arrangement of the materials left by him, who was a high Buddhist priest during the modern time. This study further set out to examine its nature and future tasks. The Series was published based on the activities and practical foundation of Daegakhoi under the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, which was formed to inherit and practice Baek's ideas. Its publication was on the basis of The Complete Collection of Grand Master Yong-Seong(18 volumes), whose publication was led by Buddhist Priest Domun in 1991, and the research project of Institute of Maha Bodhi Thought in 1998. In February, 2012, the project of publishing and computerizing A Collection of the Great Master Baek Yong-Seong began as Han Bo-gwang conducted a full-scale re-investigation into The Complete Collection of Grand Master Yong-Seong and translated it. The project was carried out as a joint project with Institute of Maha Bodhi Thought and Institute of Electronic Buddhist Texts & Culture Content. In 2013, the researchers involved in Baek's works started to translate them with the publication committee of the Series reviewing and proofreading the manuscripts, which were sorted out through reviewing and embellishment for two years. The publication work was based on total 23,238.6 pages of manuscripts including 20,533.6 pages of literature in 31 kinds and 2,705 pages of newly identified materials. It was in late October, 2016 that A Collection of the Great Master Baek Yong-Seong was published in total 20 volumes of 14,120 pages, which include eight volumes of 4,898 pages in Group I and 12 volumes of 9,222 pages in Group II. The investigator further delved into the nature and value of the Series, and the findings were as follows: First, the Series was published through a joint project among communities that tried to enhance Baek's achievements and practice his ideas. It was the fruit of devoted and organized collaborations among Institute of Maha Bodhi Thought, Institute of Electronic Buddhist Texts & Culture Content under International Journal of Buddhist Thought and Culture at Dongguk University, and Dongguk University Press over four years under the supervision of Daegakhoi. Second, it proposed the coordinates where the current Korean Buddhism should be oriented toward and contained the ideas to discover the values of Baek Yong-seong, who promoted the reform and popularization of Buddhism and developed the Daegakgyo movement during the modern days, inherit them in the contemporary times, and transmit them to the future generations. They thus asked some experts to translate his works into Korean so that the readers could easily understand them and made it sure that the Series would go through the stages of reviewing and embellishment for its unity. Third, they put together newly identified materials to overcome the old material limitation and identified and included 339 new materials of 163 types across nine categories including contributions in the Series. It was in this area that Kim Gwang-sik, an authority on the research of Baek Yong-seong, exerted his research capabilities. Fourth, the publication of the Series was accompanied by the computerization project to multiply and spread its values. The computerization project provided concerned information including the index, total table of contents, Haeje, chronology of his life, and reference, covering all the researches about him. Finally, the Series built a new foundation for the research of Buddhist studies. Not only did it broaden the horizon of understanding his ideas through the research and translation of original texts about him, but it also established a basis to expand his research to more diverse areas including the asceticism of high priests, related figures, and event information in the modern Buddhism and Korean Buddhism. In the future, the newly identified materials included in the Series will contribute to the exploration of new routes in the research of Baek and modern Buddhism. They also plan to build an archive of the results of the Series, provide the service on the Internet, and maximize the utilization of the Series, thus making a contribution to the spread of research on the related humanities as well as high Buddhist priests and modern Buddhism. The discussions in the present study will hopefully contribute to the understanding of the publication process and nature of A Collection of the Great Master Baek Yong-Seong, the related researches, and the various uses of the Series. In the future, its computerization project will help the values of Baek Yong-seong contribute to the creation of national culture beyond the Buddhist community.

본 논의는 근대시기의 불교계의 고승인 백용성이 남긴 자료를 조사 수집하여 발굴하고, 체계적으로 정리하여 『백용성 대종사 총서』 발간을 수행한 과정을 정리한 것이다. 아울러 총서의 성격과 향후의 과제는 무엇인지를 규명할 것이다. 백용성의 사상을 계승하고 실천하는 (재)대한불교조계종 대각회의 활동과 실천적 토대 위에서 『백용성 대종사 총서』가 발간되었다. 이는 1991년 도문스님이 주도한 『용성대종사 전집󰡕(18책)의 출간과 1998년 대각사상연구원의 연구사업이 토대가 되었다. 2012년 2월 한보광에 의해서 『용성 대종사 전집』을 전면 재조사 및 번역을 통하여 『백용성 대종사 총서』 발간 및 전산화 사업은 시작되었고, 대각사상연구원과 전자불전문화콘텐츠연구소의 협력사업으로 추진되었다. 2013년부터 관련 연구자들이 백용성의 저술을 번역하고, 총서편찬위원회에서는 원고를 증의하고 교정하였다. 2년 동안 증의와 윤문을 통해 원고를 정비하였다. 31종의 문헌과 20,533.6매와 신발굴자료 2,705매, 총 23,238.6매의 원고를 가지고 발간 작업을 수행하였다. 2016년 10월 말에 『백용성 대종사 총서󰡕 Ⅰ그룹은 8권, 4,898쪽, Ⅱ그룹은 12권 9,222쪽, 총 20권 14,120쪽의 총서를 출간하였다. 논자는 『백용성 대종사 총서』의 성격과 가치를 다음과 같이 밝힌다. 첫째, 『백용성 대종사 총서』는 백용성의 업적을 선양하고 그의 사상을 실천하려는 공동체의 협력 사업으로 발간이 진행되었다. (재)대한불교조계종 대각회가 주관하고 대각사상연구원, 동국대 불교학술원 전자불전문화콘텐츠연구소, 동국대출판부가 4년간 정성을 기울인 조직적, 협력작업의 성과이다. 둘째, 현재 한국불교가 나아가야할 좌표를 담았다. 과거 근대시기에 불교개혁, 대중화와 대각교 운동을 펼친 백용성의 가치를 발견하고, 현재에 이를 계승하고, 미래에 전승하기 위한 사상을 담았다. 이를 위해 전문가에게 우리말로 풀어 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 번역을 맡기고, 총서의 통일을 기하기 위하여 증의 및 윤문을 하였다. 셋째, 기존의 자료적 한계를 극복하기 위하여 신발굴자료를 집대성하여 기 고문을 비롯한 9항목 163종 339건을 발굴하여 수록하였다. 여기에 백용성 관련 연구의 권위자인 김광식의 연구역량이 발휘되었다. 넷째, 『백용성 대종사 총서』의 발간에 그치지 않고 총서의 가치를 배가하고 확산하기 위해 전산화 사업과 함께 하였다. 색인, 총목차, 해제, 연보와 참고문헌 등 관련 정보를 제공하여 백용성 관련 연구를 총망라하였다. 다섯째, 『백용성 대종사 총서』는 불교학 연구의 새로운 기반을 구축하였다. 백용성 관련 원전연구 및 번역본을 통한 사상의 이해의 지평을 넓히고, 근대불교 및 한국불교 고승의 수행과 관련 인물 및 사건 정보 등 다양한 분야로 연구를 확산할 수 있는 토대를 구축하였다. 향후 총서에 담긴 신발굴자료는 백용성 관련 연구 및 근대불교연구의 새로운 활로를 개척하는데 이바지 할 것이다. 총서의 결과를 아카이브로 구축해 인터넷 서비스를 하여 총서의 활용도를 극대화 할 것이다. 이를 통해 백용성과 불교고승 및 근대불교는 물론 관련 인문학 연구의 확산에 기여할 것이다. 본 논의를 통해 『백용성 대종사 총서』 발간의 과정과 성격에 대해 이해하고 관련 연구와 다양한 활용에 이바지하기를 기원한다. 앞으로 전산화 사업을 통해 백용성의 가치가 불교계를 넘어 민족문화 창달에 기여하는데 함께 하고자 한다.
