Already 2,000 years ago, ancient greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle discussed on the theories of democracy deeply, and Pericles, an Athenian politician, practiced democracy in his city. This article dealt with idea of the democracy in Aristotle’s political thought especially in his book Politica from three perspectives. First, in the basic principle of democracy, has been explored exactly who is the ‘citizen’ in a nation. Aristotle answered, with consideration on the situation of Athen, that the subject of the democracy should be th poor multitude, and that the democracy is a kind of political system which a alienated class of people in social status and economy exercises to overcome such a state of alienation. For him, democracy is politics of the poor, by the poor, and for the poor. In this perspective, Marxists paid attention to his view of democracy. Second, in the realization of democracy, Aristotle regards equality(ἰσότητα) as an important principle. To the principle of equality, he maintained that it must be united with the principle of justice. Approaching to the equality and justice not from the perspective of number of the people, but from the amount of property, he emphasized the responsibility of the rich people and tried to observe balance and moderation. Third, in the ideal principle of democracy, according Aristotle, it is ideal that the ideal state consists of citizen of same or similar class. This class does correspond to the middle class between the rich and the poor and should be members of the state, because they normally seek virtues of temperance and moderation. Accordingly, the best state is, to Aristotle, the one which consists mostly of people of middle class. This is, generally speaking, a very similar dream of every state in contemporary times. If the poor is more than th rich in a country, the state would be inclined to democracy. In contrast to it, the state leans toward oligarchy, if the rich is more. However, if the middle class is more than the rich and the poor, the state will go likely to the mixed polity of the democracy and the oligarchy.

말하자면 그에게서 민주정이란 빈자의, 빈자에 의한, 빈자를 위한 정치인 셈이다(of the poor, by the poor, and for the poor).
