This paper is to analyse the life of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin and characteristics of his leadership. To this end, the paper is composed of 5 chapters titled introduction; major concepts and theories of leader and leadership; the life of Yi Sun-sin, great leader who saved the country; the major virtues and characteristics of Yi's leadership; and conclusion. Admiral Yi Sun-sin is perhaps the most celebrated hero in Korean history. During the Hideyoshi invasion, he played a major role in repelling the Japanese invaders and defending the country. He was also a remarkable man in many other respects. He was an outstanding military strategist, an inventor, a poet, and a man of high moral principles. Admiral Yi is not just some ordinary man who came from the bottom to the top, but actually a son of a well-established aristocratic family of Joseon-dynasty, who learned confucianism. In other words, he was born and raised by historical flow. The major virtues of admiral Yi’s leadership are knowledge, faith, human affection, courage, dignity, creativity, justice, sincerity, and historical consciousness. Admiral Yi set a perfect corporation system through communication among his subordinates, and received much recognition from his subordinates. The reason of Joseon's victory in major naval warfares is that Admiral Yi made good use of excellent battleship and arms, appropriate strategy and tactics, and leadership corresponded to the war situation. One of critical factors of Joseon's victory in the Imjin War is Admiral Yi's leadership corresponded to the war situation. Yi's victory-oriented leadership is consisted of the leadership of change and innovation, leadership based ability, leadership based on moral influence, leadership based on historical consciousness, and leadership based on personal influence, and leadership based on positive and optimistic leadership etc. He was a great soldier, a man of sincerity, courage and principle, with a warm-hearted personality. But above all, his devotion and loyalty to his country was so great that his spirit lives forever in the hearts of the Korean people. He still remains in the minds of Korean people as one of their noblest heros.

본 논문은 충무공 이순신의 생애와 리더십의 특성을 분석하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 지 도자와 리더십의 주요개념 및 이론, 위대한 구국의 지도자 이순신의 생애, 이순신의 리더십 의 주요덕목과 특성 등을 차례로 분석한 후 결론을 도출해 본 것이다. 충무공 이순신 장군(제독)은 한국사에 있어서 가장 존경받는 영웅일 것이다. 도요토미 히 데요시가 조선을 침공한 임진왜란 기간에 그는 일본의 침략자를 몰아내고 조국을 수호하는 데 주된 역할을 수행했다. 그는 또한 다른 여러 분야에서 놀랄만한 인물이었다. 그는 두드 러진 군사전략가, 발명가, 시인, 그리고 고도의 도덕적 원칙을 가진 인물이었다. 이순신은 아무런 뿌리도 없이 어느 순간에 불쑥 솟아난 개인이 아니라, 조선전기 유학사상의 배경, 다시 말해서 역사적 흐름 속에서 탄생하고 성장한 인물이었다고 할 수 있다. 이순신은 세력구성요소간의 원활한 협조체계를 구축하였고, 그 대상들은 이순신의 인품과 능력을 인정하여 이에 적극적으로 협조하였다. 임진왜란에서 조선의 결정적인 승리요인 중 의 하나는 전황에 부합한 이순신의 리더십 발휘였다. 승리를 가져온 이순신의 리더십은 변 화개혁의 리더십, 실력위주의 리더십, 역사인식의 리더십, 인격감화의 리더십, 적극적ㆍ낙천적 리더십 등 으로 구성되어 있다고 할 수 있다. 이순신은 9가지 덕목을 지닌 지도자였다. ①지식(승리할 수 있는 군사적으로 전문성을 지 닌), ②신의(信義), ③인애, ④용기(옳은 일은 과감하게 하고, 어려울수록 선두에 서는), ⑤ 위엄(신상필벌을 엄정히 하는), ⑥창의성(미래를 대비하는), ⑦정의감(의리에 죽고 의리에 사는), ⑧정성, ⑨역사의식(사필귀정의) 등이 바로 그것이다. 그는 오늘날의 현실에서 비추 어 보더라도 귀감이 되는 훌륭한 지도자였다고 할 수 있다. 그는 위대한 군인이자 따뜻한 마음의 인격자이면서 성실하고 용기있고 원칙에 충실한 인 물이었다. 그러나 무엇보다도 국가에 대해 헌신하고 충성을 다한 위대한 지도자였기에 그의 정신은 한국인의 마음속에 남아 있다. 그는 가장 숭고한 영웅의 한 사람으로 한국인의 마음 속에 영원히 살아 희망과 용기와 비전을 주게 될 것이다.
