The purpose of this study was to examine how freshmen seminars, which have been introduced actively from 2015, are operated in universities and provide insight on how they can be improved. A self-report survey was conducted with 1,017 valid responses from students in 12 universities. According to the results, freshmen’s satisfaction of freshmen seminars is high. The seminars should be expanded and diversified for the present seminars have been mostly limited to orientation seminars. The topics of freshmen seminars should include character development(self-exploration, understanding others, etc.). Each class should be in groups with less than or equal to 40 students. Freshmen seminars should be consistently assessed and improved. This study would give implications to develop freshman seminar further.

본 연구는 2015년 이후 본격적으로 도입된 신입생 세미나가 적절히 운영되고 있는지 점검하고 신입생 세미나 교과목의 개선방향을 제시하기 위해 신입생 세미나 교과목의 현황과 만족도를 분석하는데 목적을 둔다. 전국의 12개 4년제 대학 학생 1,200명을 무선 표집하여 설문을 실시하였고, 회수된 1,017명의 응답을 분석하였다. 연구결과 신입생 세미나의 만족도는 높은 편으로 지속적으로 확대될 필요가 있으며, 신입생 세미나가 주로 오리엔테이션 세미나의 유형으로 운영되는 경향이 있어서 다양화될 필요가 있다. 신입생 세미나의 강의 주제는 인성(자아탐색, 타인에 대한 이해 등)의 주제를 포함하도록 설계되어야 하며, 40명 이하의 소그룹 강의로 개설되는 것이 바람직한 것으로 나타났다. 현재 진행되고 있는 신입생 세미나는 지속적으로 점검하고 개선해나가야 하며 이러한 노력은 신입생 세미나 교과목의 취지와 활용도를 높이는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
