'Bio media' generally consists of organisms and biotic materials. Rather than being a metaphor or symbol of life, bio media is an actual entity within our material and social environment. In cases of hands-on artistic interventions with bio media, in which biological artifacts are produced as results, artists are faced with a diversity of technical, institutional, and social restrictions. In addition, the contemporary anti-anthropocentric world view towards life, ecology and the environment leads to changing conceptions of conventional restrictions towards interacting with life forms and bio media. Artistic media in the past were subject to concepts such as production, management, sales, transfer and disposal. In the contemporary art world, in which media continuously gains vitality in a literal sense, we are beginning to consider if human artists and bio media may have equal rights. Based on this realization, more artists are attempting to formulate long-term relationships with particular bio media to build cases for care and solicitude towards their liveliness. Examples of such artists include Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, as well as Carol Gigliotti, who pointed out the contradictions in some bio art practices that objectify bio media to convey bioethical messages.

생물(organism) 혹은 생물유래물질(biotic material)로 이루어진 생물 미디어(bio media)는 생명에 대한 비유나 상징이 아니라 현실 속에 살아 있는 물질적, 사회적 실체이다. 예술가가 생물 미디어에 직접 손 을 대어 개입하거나, 이를 사용한 인공물을 만들어 발표하기 위해서는 여러 유형의 기술과 제도, 그리고 사회적 제약을 넘어서야 한다. 동시에, 21세기에 접어들면서 인간중심적(anthropocentric) 생명관, 생태 관, 환경관에 대한 반성적 자각이 확산되면서 생물 미디어를 대하는 관습적 제약들에도 변화가 생기고 있다. 그동안 예술 미디어가 제작과 관리, 매매, 양도, 폐기의 대상이었다면, 이제 미디어가 살아서 우리 삶 속으로 들어올 때 평등하고 수평적인 관계를 맺을 수 있는지 고민하게 되었다. 이제 더 많은 예술가 들이 생물 미디어와 장기적이고 깊이 있는 교류를 통해 이에 대한 돌봄(care)과 배려(solicitude)의 방식 을 추구하고 있으며, 그 대표적인 사례로 생물 미디어와 직접 상호작용할 때 발생하는 예술적 결과들이 우리 사회에서 평등한 생물로 작동할 수 있는지에 대해 실천적으로 탐구하는 오론 캇츠(Oron Catts)와 요낫 주어(Ionat Zurr), 그리고 생명윤리적 메시지를 주장하기 위해 생물 미디어를 도구화하는 현대 바 이오 아트의 모순을 짚어 낸 캐롤 질리오티(Carol Gigliotti)를 들 수 있다.
