The rapid modernization which is accompanied by the social condition of anonymity, the deterioration of hyo culture, the rapid increase of the population of old people, the change of the family relation and single-person household due to the nuclear family, the increase of the relative poverty due to the neoliberalism, the rapid anomy, the widespread bureaucracy and the rapid social isolation caused lonely society. Therefore, the lonely death of the elderly since 2000 has emerged as a major social problem in Korea. It was caused by the structure factor inclusive of the decline of hyo culture, the causal factor inclusive of the aged society, relative inequality and the direct factor inclusive of the crisis old man. Therefore, a good place to start in the study of the lonely death of the elderly is to approach it in view of the interdisciplinary aspect contray to the existing studies which have approached it in view of the social welfare and administration theory.

사회가 급속히 서구화되는 과정에서 익명사회의 등장, 효문화의 쇠퇴, 노인인구의 급증, 핵가족의 진전 등으로 가족관계의 변화와 1인가구의 증대, 신자유주의적 경제로 인한 상대적 빈곤의 증대, 문화지체와 아노미의 심화, 절차를 중시하는 관료화의 만연으로 인한 개인주의의 심화와 개인적 고립의 증대 등 다양한 요소의 역동성은 고독사회를 촉진하였고, 그러한 고독사회의 현상으로 2000년대부터 노인고독사가 주요한 사회적 문제로 대두되었다. 노인고독사는 효문화의 쇠퇴 등을 내포하는 구조적 요인, 1인가구의 증대와 분배의 불평등 심화와 초고령 사회의 등장 등을 내포하는 고독사 유발요인과 위기노인에 대한 보호의 부재라는 고독사의 직접적 요인의 역동성 작용에 의해 발생하게 된다. 이러한 노인 고독사에 대해서 본 논문에서는 기존의 견해와 달리 고독사의 개념부터 새롭게 정의하였다. 그리고 행정학과 사회복지학적인 관점으로만 일관하는 선행연구의 접근의 문제점을 지적하고 효의 사회화 등을 포함하는 학제적 관점에서 노인고독사를 접근하였는데 이 점이 바로 선행연구들과 차이점이다.
