이 글은 들뢰즈의 저작인 『푸코』에 대한 서평이다. 한국의 지식 사회에서 푸코는 사회철학자나 정치철학자 또는 윤리학자로 읽히고 있지만, 들뢰즈는 『푸코』를 통해서 푸코를 뛰어난 존재론자로 자리매김한다. 이 논문에서는『푸코』에서 개진된 존재론을 통해서 우리는 푸코의 작업들을 불연속적인 마디로 나눌 필요가 없다는 사실, 즉 푸코의 사상은 일관된다는 사실을 밝힌다. 이 책의 전개는 <언표>→<지식>→<권력>→<외부와 자기>의 순서로 되어 있지만, 존재론적인 순서는 정 반대이다. 따라서 이 서평에서는 <외부와 자기>의 문제를 먼저 탐구한다. 그리고 나서 ‘지층의 외부’에 존재하는 권력=힘 관계의 문제를 탐구하고, 이러한 권력이 통과하는 ‘특이점’들과 그들의 계열화를 알튀세르의 <우발성의 유물론>을 통해 설명한다. 그 후에 지층의 내부를 의미하는 지식과 지층의 외부를 의미하는 권력이 현실성과 잠재성의 관계를 맺음을 밝힌다. 또한 푸코 사상의 일관성을 존재론적 맥락에서 확인하며 이러한 푸코의 존재론을 <외부성>과 <표면성>의 존재론으로 규정하고 끝으로 푸코와 들뢰즈 사상의 연관성을 밝힌다.
