This study aims at developing fashion illustrations by utilizing characteristics of humorous expressions from Korean folk paintings which make up country’s national cultural. For study purposes, first, documents on humor and on approximately 300 folk paintings created between the latter half of the 19th century and the late stages of the Chosun Dynasty, in which the characteristics of folk paintings were best shown, were researched, and one of the characteristics of folk paintings that appear in these documents, humorous expression, was organized. Second, by applying these characteristics shown through research we have developed six fashion illustrations. Folk Painting refers to a picture drawn and enjoyed by ordinary people, and Humor particularly means the satire created by the decency in one’s word or behavior that does not fit the comical air. Content-wise, humorous expressions in folk painting reflect people’s lives, desires, resistance against power and social criticism, while method-wise, humor is made through ‘twist and distortion’, ‘omission and exaggeration’, and ‘transformation and representation’. Drawing focus to these characteristics of humorous expressions in folk paintings, this study developed six fashion illustrations, whose contents feature satire on the ideal body image in the modern society and ostentation of beauty, each two focusing respectively on ‘twist and distortion’, ‘omission and exaggeration’ and ‘transformation and representation’. ‘Omit and exaggeration’ was used to create humor in fashion illustration Work Ⅰ, representing people’s desire for big eyes and sensual lips through plastic surgery. In Work Ⅱ, humor regarding women’s pursuit of a slim body is expressed through ‘twist and distortion’. In Work Ⅲ, humor on designer bags as a representation of wealth and chic is accomplished through ‘transformation and representation’. This study’s development of humorous fashion illustrations holds significance in that these techniques were sought from Korea’s cultural resources and were combined with fashion illustrations.

본 연구는 한국적 문화 콘텐츠인 민화의 해학적 표현 특성을 활용하여 패션 일러스트레이션을 개발하고자하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 목적을 위하여 첫째, 민화의 특징이 가장 잘 나타나고 있는 19세기 후반부터조선시대 말까지 제작된 300여 개의 민화와 해학에 대해 문헌을 조사하였고, 이 문헌들에 나타나는 민화의여러 특징 중에 하나인 해학적 표현 특성에 대하여 정리하였다. 둘째, 문헌 연구에서 나타난 민화의 해학적표현 특성을 적용하여 패션 일러스트레이션 작품 여섯 개를 개발하였다. ‘민화’는 민중에 의해 그려지고 애호된 그림을 의미하며, ‘해학’은 ‘익살스러운 가운데 점잖은 말이나 짓’을 뜻한다. 민화에 나타나는 해학적 표현은 내용적으로는 서민의 삶과 염원, 권력에 대한 저항과 사회 비판을 담고 있으며, 방법적으로는 ‘뒤틀림과왜곡’, ‘생략과 과장’, ‘변용과 상징’을 통해 익살과 웃음을 자아내고 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 해학적 표현특성에 중점을 두고 있으며, 내용적으로는 현대인이 추구하는 인체와 미(美)의 과시에 대한 풍자를 담고, ‘뒤틀림과 왜곡’, ‘생략과 과장’, ‘변용과 상징’에 초점을 맞춰 각각 2개씩의 패션 일러스트레이션 작품을 개발하였다. 패션 일러스트레이션 작품 Ⅰ은 성형을 통해 추구하게 되는 커다란 눈과 관능적인 입술에 대한 해학을‘생략과 과장’으로 표현하였으며, 작품 Ⅱ는 여성들이 추구하는 날씬한 인체에 대한 해학을 ‘뒤틀림과 왜곡’ 으로 표현하였다. 작품 Ⅲ은 부나 세련미를 대변하는 명품 가방에 대한 해학을 ‘변용과 상징’으로 표현하였다. 본 연구의 해학적 패션 일러스트레이션 개발은 한국적 문화 콘텐츠로부터 우리만의 표현 기법을 찾고패션 일러스트레이션에 접목해 보았다는데 그 의의가 있다.
