‘Dressing down’ and ‘eco issue’ have emerged as a fashion trend since the 1990s as a solution for sustainable fashion using eco-friendly materials and minimum processing process. But recently, effort is being made to find new ways so that the product does not go to waste, such as reproduction by utilizing waste materials or planning ahead from the production level. Zero-waste fashion is being researched by many designers as it can promote new levels of creativity while minimizing leftover pieces of fabric that are thrown away during the pattern manufacturing process. This research suggests diverse types of designs using cotton jersey and subtraction cutting method for zero waste. In this research, five pieces of zero-waste dresses were made, choosing cotton jersey as the key material because it is practical due to its elasticity, economical because it is relatively cheap and convenient for washing easily. Subtraction cutting was used as the main technique; folding and tying the fabric to form patterns for zero waste so that the comfort of jersey could be highlighted without the need for additional cutting of the fabric. The finished piece is natural drapery ornament with pleats that represents originality and the elasticity of jersey can cover different body sizes. Another positive element to note is the relatively cheap price of the raw material which enables to commercialize in bulks due to the excellent price competitiveness. Therefore, it is highly anticipated that zero-waste fashion design using cotton jersey and subtraction cutting will be the next sustainable fashion trend that would be well received by the public. Although it is currently being researched in a small scale, if more efforts are put into the creative design development through a change of perspective, it could become a well-established method for sustainable fashion.

현대사회의 가장 큰 문제점으로 지적되는 환경오염은 산업화에 따른 화학물질의 오남용과 물질만능주의로 인한 과잉생산이 주된 원인이다. 1990년대 이후 패션 트렌드에서 보이는 ‘덜차려입기(dress down)’와 ‘에코이슈(eco issue)’는 친환경 재료사용과 최소한의 가공 공정을 통한 생산 방식을 지속가능 패션의 해결책으로삼았으나 최근에는 이미 사용을 다한 폐기물을 활용하여 재생산하거나 폐기물이 되지 않도록 생산과정에서부터 계획하는 방법이 모색되고 있다. 제로 웨이스트 패션은 디자인, 패턴제작 시점에서 버려지는 자투리원단을 고려하여 이를 최소화 하면서 디자인의 독창성을 살릴 수 있는 것으로 많은 디자이너에 의해 연구되고 있다. 이에 연구자는 제로 웨이스트를 위한 패션디자인 방법 중, 서브트렉션 커팅법(subtraction cutting)을활용하여 면 저지 소재로 다양한 디자인을 제안하고자 한다. 본 연구에는 신축성이 있어 실용적이며, 세탁이용이해 편리하며, 가격이 저렴해 경제적인 면 저지를 선택하여 제로 웨이스트 디자인 원피스 드레스 다섯점을 제작하였다. 주로 사용된 기법은 제로 웨이스트를 위한 재단 방법 중 평면의 원단을 접거나, 꼬는 방법으로 패턴을 구성하는 서브트렉션 커팅으로 저지 소재가 갖는 편안한 느낌과 어우러져 사각형의 원단 안에서 별도의 커팅 없이 제로 웨이스트 패션디자인을 개발 하였다. 완성된 의상은 플리츠에 의해 만들어진 자연스러운 드레이퍼리 장식으로 패션의 독창성을 표현하며 저지 소재의 신축성은 한 사이즈로 다양한 사이즈스펙을 커버할 수 있다. 또한 저렴한 원부자재 비용은 가격 경쟁력이 우수해 대량으로 상품화 할 수 있는긍정적 요소이다. 그러므로 면 저지 소재와 서브트렉션 커팅법을 활용한 제로 웨이스트 패션디자인은 대중에게 접근성이 우수한 지속 가능한 패션이 될 수 있을 것이라 기대된다. 현재는 소규모의 스튜디오에서 연구되고 있는 상황이지만 관점의 변화를 통한 창의적인 디자인 개발이 지속적으로 이루어진다면 지속 가능한 패션을 위한 긍정적 방법으로 자리매김할 수 있을 것이다.
