The paper aims to discuss the elements of ‘play’ and ‘drama’, the essential characteristics of Educational Drama and to contemplate its possibilities from the perspective of early childhood education practices. Drawing the analysis and review of related references and theories of play, drama, and education, the paper examines similarities and connectivity between Educational Drama and dramatic play practices in early childhood education. Also, by using the case study of ‘issue-based’ drama mentoring program for the Head Start classroom in the U.S., the paper discusses the findings from the case study as a ground for possible necessity for more diverse application of drama in early childhood education.

본 연구는 놀이와 드라마로 대변되는 교육연극의 본질과 특성을 논의하고 그러한 교육연극이 유아교육 의 관점과 실천에서 어떠한 연계성과 가능성을 지니고 있는가를 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 놀이, 드라마, 그리고 교육에 대한 문헌 및 이론들의 분석을 통하여 교육연극과 유아교육의 극놀이와의 유사 성 및 연계성을 검토하였다. 또한 교육연극의 한 갈래인‘이슈중심 드라마’의 미국 헤드스타트 (Head Start) 프로그램 적용사례를 통해 유아교육 현장에서의 시사점을 점검하고, 보다 다양한 교육연극 드라 마의 유아교육 현장 활용의 필요성을 제안하였다.
