In 2014 through 2016, Liaoning Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Longcheng District Museum of Chaoyang City conducted cooperative excavation to the Banlanshan Cemetery, and confirmed that this cemetery has been carefully planned and constructed : the earth was oiled onto mounds on the ground, on which burials and sacrificial facilities were built. In total, 78 burials, one sacrificial altar and 29 sacrificial pits were recovered, the burials of which could be classified into three types, namely earthen pit burials, stone cist burials and cairn burials. The artifacts unearthed in the excavation included pottery wares, some implements and jades, the latter numbered over 140 pieces. In the later period, the cemetery was zoned by function : the burial zone was in the south of the cemetery and the sacrificial zone was in the north. This excavation entirely revealed the construction procedure of the cairn burials of the late Hongshan Culture for the first time, which provided complete date for the research on the construction of the cairn burials.
