The purpose of this study is to look into the economic and social foundation of peasants in Cheongju city, the participants of Donghak Peasants Movement, through 『Munuigun Yangan』. The method of the study is to carry out statistical analysis on the whole contents about Munuigun Yangan. Munuigun is the current southern area of Cheongju city surrounding Gadeokmyeon, Munui-myeon, Hyeondo-myeon and Bukang-myeon of Sejong-city. The study provided the understanding on the economic and social foundation of peasants by looking into their landholding and cultivation scale. Firstly, this study figured out where Munuigun at that time is the area of Cheonju-city at present, and land distribution and class of the area.Munuigun is a broad area adjacent to Kumkang river making it good soil to cultivate and favorable to supply agricultural water. The ratio of paddy farming exceeded that of upland farming. Secondly, in the process of studying the residential environment of peasants, I could find out that Wonho and Hyupho were separately marked. However, it was hard to figure out the reason of the separation and their existence. Thirdly, this study examines the distribution of tile-roofed houses, private educational facilities, residing clans and witow focusing mainly on underclass peasants. This study reveals that the portion of underclass peasants with little landholding and cultivation acreage accounts for 78%~88%, which is very high. The result of the study helped to look over the living conditions of peasants who were being deserted from land. Lastly, this study compares the peasants of Munuigun with peasants of other parts of north Chungcheong province to see their status. The portion of underclass peasants of each area revealed similar aspect in downward trend of peasants, although the scale and number of peasants of each area(Gun) was clearly divided into big, small and midium size. It is assumed that bigger Gun had more wealthy class peasants and underclass peasants in small Gun were much more impoverished than those in bigger Gun.

이 연구의 목적은 동학농민혁명의 참여 주체인 충청도 청주지역 농민과 그들의 사회경제 기반을 『문의군양안』을 통해서 확인하는 것이다. 이에 대한연구 방법은 문의군양안의 기재된 내용 전체를 통계 분석하는 것이다. 문의군은 현재 청주시 남부지역에 해당하는 가덕면, 문의면, 현도면 및 세종시 부강면 지역이다. 문의군 양안을 통해서 농민들의 사회경제기반인 토지(전답)의소유나 경작 규모를 확인하여 그들의 상황을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구의 내용은 첫 번째 당시 문의군이 현재 청주시 어느 지역에 속하고있으며, 전체 토지 현황과 토지등급을 확인하였다. 문의군은 평야가 넓고 금강과 가까워 농업용수의 공급도 원할 했으며 토질이 좋았고 밭농사보다는 논농사의 비율이 높았다. 두 번째 농민이 거주환경을 확인하는 과정에서 민호의 경우 원호와 협호가 분리 표시되어 있었다. 하지만 원호와 협호가 구분되어 표기된 이유와 이들의 존재하는 의미는 구체적으로 무엇인지 확인하기 어려웠다. 세 번째 민간 기와집의 분포, 민간교육시설, 세거 성씨와 위토의 분포에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 또 농민들은 토지의 소유 규모나 거주 유무에 따라서 다양한 계층으로 분류가 되지만 이 글에서 그 실태만 소개하였고 주로 하층농민을 살펴보았다. 이 연구의 결과 농민층의 동향에서 두드러지는 것은 토지소유 면적과 경작 면적이 적은 하층농민의 비율이 78%~88%로 상당히 높다는 점이다. 이를 통해 토지로부터 이탈되어 가고 있었던 농민들의 형편을 살필 수 있었다. 마지막으로 충북의 다른 지역 농민들과 비교를 시도하여서 문의군의 농민들이 어떤 위치에 있는지 확인할 수 있었다. 각 군의 규모나 농민 숫자만 보더라도 대, 중, 소로 명확하게 구분될 만큼 큰 차이가 있었지만 하층농민의 비율을 보면 농민층의 하향화 현상에서는 유사한 양상을 보였다. 부유한 농민층은 큰 군일수록 더 많이 존재하고, 같은 하층농민이라도 작은 군에 살고 있던 농민이 더욱 절대적으로 빈곤했던 것으로 추정된다.
