Art has been diversified and developed individually for each genre since ancient ages. After 20thcentury, there has been a trend to be integrated among several kinds of art genres or formed with the mixture of various media technologies pursuing Total Art. It has started in dance to be examined targeting Total Art from mid-20th century. As one of choreographers, Loie Fuller, has performed the total artistic activities since 19th century. She has concentrated on the construction of symbols based on Total Art and acted as a role of developers of Total Art in Dance. In this study, the concept and feature of Total Art has been examined in order to investigate the artistic characteristic of Loie Fuller with a viewpoint of Total Art. As a result, her artistic pursuit is kept in line with Total Art with respect to the concept, specialty, integrity, equality for each artistic genre, experimentalism. She has produced the integrated artistic performance based on specialty and equality in lighting, costume, movement and music through experimental and future oriented investigation. Totally synchronized through the harmonization among lighting, costume, movement and music, she has focused on the novel symbol from 19th to early 20th with a performance of Total Art directing her unique way in 21th contemporary dance and performing art. Hence, Loie Fuller who has been generally recognized as a symbol of Art Nouveau and precursor of modern dance is surely esteemed as a pioneer of Total Art in dance since 20th century.

원시시대 이후 분화된 예술은 각각의 장르별로 발전되어 왔으며 20세기에 들어서는 예술장르 간의 통합, 혹은 다양한 매체와의 혼합으로 총체적인 예술을 지향하고 있다. 무용 예술 역시 20 세기 중반부터 이러한 총체예술을 지향한 시도들이 활성화되기 시작하였는데, 로이 풀러는 이러 한 예술의 경향에 앞서 19세기 말부터 총체적인 예술 활동을 펼친 무용가이다. 그녀는 총체예술 을 기반으로 한 상징물을 만드는데 주력한 인물로 무용이 총체예술로 발전을 이루는데 선구적 역 할을 하였다고 볼 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 로이 풀러의 총체적 예술 성향을 알아보고자 총체예술의 개념과 특징을 살펴 보고, 이것이 로이 풀러의 예술 세계에 어떠한 형태로 드러나는지 알아보았다. 결과적으로 로이 풀러의 예술성향은 총체예술의 개념과 전문성, 유기성, 통합성, 예술장르 간 의 형평성, 실험성, 미래지향성 등을 바탕으로 하는 총체예술적 특징에 부합하였다. 그녀는 조명, 의상, 동작, 음악 등에서의 전문성 및 형평성을 바탕으로 실험적이고 미래지향적인 탐구를 통해 유기적이고 통합적인 예술 작품을 만들어냈다. 조명, 의상, 동작, 음악 간의 조화를 이용하여 하나의 새로운 상징물을 만드는 것에 초점을 맞 춘 로이 풀러는 19세기 말부터 20세기 초에 이르기 까지 총체예술적 성향을 지닌 예술 활동을 통해 21세기 컨템포러리 댄스와 공연예술에 발전적 방향을 제시하였다. 이로써 아르누보의 상징, 현대무용의 선구자로만 소개되어 온 로이 풀러는 20세기 이후 무용에 있어서 총체예술의 선구자로도 볼 수 있다.
