The purpose of this study is to present the essential values of funeral rites in the church of Korea, according to the understanding of death interpreted by the evangelical perspective. These values which were planned in God’s providence for creation are the rights and assets that should be included in the funeral rites of every denomination in order that pastors and church members who are involved in the funeral ceremonies can recognize and celebrate them. The meaning of the death of a Christian become more explicit through Christological, eschatological, and creation theology understandings. These understandings help us to have hope for eternal life in Christ. Therefore, emotions in response to the death of a Christian are not only grief and fear, but also reverence. Views on the death of a Christian as mentioned in the bible, writings of Augustine, the Westminster Catechism, and the Confessions of the Presbyterian Church in Korea are entirely related to God’s eternal providence. Christians do not lose their consciousness after death, but share fellowship with Christ and with the departed faithful, and worship God eternally as the creatures of a new creation. In the hymnals, death is described as the object we ought not fear because Jesus has overcome it. The songs tell us that it is like the realm of dreams and reminds us of the kingdom of God, inspired from theological understandings that death is the same as sleep, harmony, and time of resurrection. The themes of funeral sermons are proclamation of gospel, church community, offering, sacraments, healing, remembrance, mission, and education. The concepts of a funeral space are remembrance, rest, community, fellowship, and a gospel witness. In this way, the Christian funeral has unique essential values different from the general funeral: mystery, thanksgiving, celebration, and hope. These values are the benefits that the Christian has received in the Lord’s supper all his or her life.

이 글은 복음적 관점에서 해석한 그리스도인의 죽음에 대한 이해를 바탕으로, 한국 기독교 장례 예전에 있어서 지녀야할 핵심적 가치들을 제시하는 목적이 있다. 이 가치들은 하나님의 창조의 섭리 안에서 미리 정하신 바로 그리스도인으로 누려야할 권리와 자산으로 장례 예전을 집례하는 목회자들과 장례사역의 사역자들이 인식할 수 있도록 각 교단의 장례 예전 속에 표현되어 있어야 한다. 그리스도인의 죽음의 의미는 기독론적 이해, 종말신학적 이해와 창조신학적 서술을 통해 더욱 분명해 진다. 이러한 이해는 계속해서 예수님과 함께 새롭고 영원 생명으로 태어나겠다는 마음을 준비하도록 돕는다. 그리스도인이 죽음을 대하는 감정을 보면 슬픔, 두려움, 그리고 존경심이다. 성서와 어거스틴, 웨스트민스터신앙고백, 그리고 대한예수교장로회 신앙고백서에서 죽음은 하나님의 영원하신 경륜의 관점으로 다루어진다. 그리스도인은 죽음 후에 의식을 잃어버리는 것이 아니라 그리스도와 먼저 간 믿음의 사람들과 사랑의 사귐을 나눌 수 있을 뿐 아니라 새창조의 피조물들과 더불어 하나님을 영원토록 예배하게 될 것이다. 찬송에 나타난 죽음 이해를 보면 죽음은 예수께서 이기신 대상이고, 따라서 두려워하지 말 대상이다. 또 꿈을 꾸는 것과 같은 것이고, 하늘나라를 상기시킨다. 찬송가의 이런 묘사는 죽음을 수면, 화목, 부활의 시간 등으로 해석한 신학적 이해로부터 온 것이다. 장례식 설교의 주제들을 열거하면, 복음 선포로서의 메시지, 교회공동체의 지체로서의 메시지, 봉헌의 메시지, 성만찬적 메시지, 치유적 메시지, 회상의 메시지, 선교적 메시지, 그리고 교육적 메시지다. 장례 예전을 위한 공간에도 간직해야할 개념이 있는데 안식, 공동체(코이노니아), 복음 증거, 기억으로 요약된다. 기독교 장례 예전은 일반 장례식과는 구별되는 핵심 가치가 있는데 신비, 감사, 경축, 소망이다. 다시 말하면, 그리스도인은 죽음의 예전은 일반 장례식이 지닌 슬픔과 애도와 위로는 물론이고 신비로 이어지는 사건, 감사할 일, 하나님의 친밀한 임재의 순간, 함께 경축할 시간, 그리고 가장 큰 소망을 표현하는 기회로 여긴다. 이러한 개념은 그리스도인들이 평생 누려왔던 성만찬의 은혜에서 누렸던 혜택들이다. 즉, 성만찬에서 누렸던 하나님께 감사(thanksgiving), 그리스도의 성육신의 신비, 성령의 임재, 그리스도인의 코이노니아, 종말론적 식사의 즐거움이 바로 그것이다.
