What is ‘human’ is modulated by inhuman (technogenesis) and nonhuman (inorganic) forces, which provides an understanding of the posthuman. In this essay I draw on Deleuze and Guattari’s understanding of control societies to question Big Data, and how it impacts art and its education, especially the field of design in ‘designer capitalism.’ The essay ends by arguing that the hylomorphic tradition that has shaped design studies can be overcome through various forms of biomimicry that recognizes the ‘vibrancy’ of matter. This then is a 21st century competency needed in an age that will possibly be called the Anthropocene, or euphemistically called climate change?
