It is only recently that photograph expressions are included in the contents of elementary art curriculum. Both learners and teachers are familiar with "taking pictures", but they are unfamiliar with the educational activities conducted under the name of "photography education". Therefore, school photography education is bound to depend heavily on the contents presented in art textbooks and teacher’s guide books. This study attempts to analyze the educational texts related to "photo education" presented in elementary art textbooks and teacher’s manuals to reveal what myths are composed using a semiotic approach. The results of the study are summarized in four texts in the textbook for art education and tried to discuss myths. Four myths are as follows: (1) A photograph which is made with a plan is more artistic than a picture to be simply taken, (2) It is necessary to prepare interesting photography education for children using photo collage, composite photo, optical illusion, directed photo, (3) It is important to make a photo with a good and clear focus, and (4) In order to take good pictures, it is necessary to understand the structures and functions of the camera, and to be able to know and utilize various shooting techniques.

사진표현이 초등 미술교과 내용으로 포함된 것은 최근의 일이다. 학습자도 교사도 “사진 찍기”는 익숙하지만 “사진 교육”이란 이름으로 행해지는 교육활동에 대해서는 낯설기만 하다. 따라서 본격적인 사진교육은 미술교과서나 교사용 지도에서 제시되는 내용에 크게 의존할 수밖에 없다. 본 연구는 초등미술교과서와 교사용지도서에서 제시하고 있는 “사진 교육”관련 텍스트를 대상으로 기호학적 분석을 시도하여, 어떤 신화들이 구성되고 있는 지 드러낸다. 연구결과는 미술교과용 교육 텍스트에서 네 가지 신화들 정리하고, 신화를 깨기 위한 논의를 시도하였다. 네 가지 신화는 다음과 같다: (1) 찍는 사진보다 만드는 사진의 예술성이 강조된 사진교육, (2) 대상으로부터 목격된 “의미”의 표현보다 대상의 사실적 재현이 강조된 사진교육, (3) 재미있는 사진교육에 대한 강박, (4) 좋은 사진을 찍기 위해 촬영기법들의 학습이 우선되어야 한다는 것이다. 기호학적 분석을 통해 드러난 신화들을 확인하는 과정에서 신화 깨기의 방안도 함께 찾아진다.
