The convergence of digital technology is not only the crafts but also the interest and expectation all over the arts. There are various attempts and experimental works in contemporary art, both east and west. In addition, the presentation and suggestion of new expression methods and discourses are emerging through the development of technology. However, these discourses and attempts tend to focus on digital technology itself. In other words, that the tendency to express according to digital machine in the selection and production of materials, and the structure and elements of digital machine are emphasized. There is a concern that this expression of concentration of digital technology will be limited. Therefore, this thesis explores the importance of concepts through the analysis of the works of European artists whose concepts are not preceded by the concentration of digital technology in expressing crafts. The categories of digital technology are described by dividing them into 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional. This will discuss the approach based on the composition of digital technology and the characteristics of the approach based on the concept of the artist as 'conceptual approach'. In the way of developing the discussion, this will analyze the 'digital crafts' artists working in Europe. Among the approaches, focusing on 'conceptual approach', this will describe how digital technology use a role as a tool of expression. Based on this research, this suggest that digital technology can create a new paradigm craft culture as a tool of expression of concepts and thoughts.

디지털 기술의 융합은 공예분야 뿐만이 아니라 예술 전 분야에 걸쳐 관심과 기대가 뜨겁다. 동서양을 막론하고 현대 미술 안에서 다양한 시도와 실험적인 작품들이 나오고 있다. 또한 기술의 발전에 따른 새로운 표현 방법의 제안과 담론들이 제시되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 담론과 시도가 작품을 표현 하는데 있어 디지털 기계의 구조와 요소에 초점이 맞추어지는 즉 디지털 기술 자체에 집중 되어 있는 경향을 볼 수 있다. 현 시점에서 디지털 기술 자체의 집중에 의한 작품 혹은 상품이 새롭게 보일 수 있으나 시간이 지나면 이러한 기술적 접근 방법은 한계점에 도달할 것이라 예상된다. 그러므로 본 연구는 공예를 표현하는데 있어서 디지털 기술 자체의 집중이 아닌 개념이 선행 되는 유럽작가들의 작품 분석을 통해 개념의 중요성을 조명해 보았다. 디지털 기술의 범주를 평면(2D)과 입체(3D)로 나누어서 서술 하였다. 작품을 표현함에 있어 개념에 중심을 두고 접근한 방법을 ‘개념적 접근’이라 정의하고 논의를 전개 한다. ‘개념적 접근’ 방법은 디지털 기술이 표현의 도구로써의 역할을 하는 것에 대한 서술이다. 이러한 연구를 토대로 디지털 기술이 작가의 개념과 생각의 표현 도구로써 사용되어질 때 생성되는 결과물들은 새로운 패러다임의 공예 문화를 창출 할 수 있음을 제시한다.
