When I first looked through the records of Korean immigrants on the foreigner register in Mexico in 1989, a photo attracted my attention of a flapper-haired, smiling, beautiful woman who stood out among the others. She was Sai Shoki, a famed dancer who performed in Mexico City in October, 1940. When I met Judy Van Zile, professor of University of Hawaii in Puerto España in the summer of 2000, the professor told me that her study on Korean dance was nearly completed. Her study looked into the performance tour in America by Choi Seung-hee(Shoki’s Korean name)and included articles on her Bogota performance. That led me to the presentation of this study in which I was to give details about Shoki’s dance career, records on her Mexico performance, and her political position on her nation’s independence movement, which drove her to move to North Korea and continue her career there. 내가 1989년에 처음으로 외국인등록대장에서 멕시코 내 한국 이민자들 기록을 검토했을 때 신여성(flapper) 헤어스타일을 하고 웃는 얼굴을 가진 아름다운 여성의 사진이 나머지 다른 여성들과 대비되어 나의 시선을 끌었다. 바로 최승희의 얼굴이었다. 그녀는 1940년 10월에 멕시코시티에서 공연을 한 유명 무용가였다. 2000년 여름에 푸에르토 에스파냐에서 하와이대학교 주디 반 자일(Judy Van Zile) 교수와 만났을 때, 반 자일 교수는 한국 무용에 대한 연구를 마무리 짓고 있다고 말했다. 그 연구에는 최승희(사이쇼키의 한국어 이름)의 아메리카 순회 공연에 대한 내용이 들어가 있었는데, 보고타에서의 공연에 관한 기사도 포함되어 있었다. 이것이 본 연구 발표의 동기가 되었으며, 본 연구는 최승희의 무용가로서의 약력, 멕시코 공연에 대한 기록, 결국 북한으로 가서 예술 활동을 계속하게끔 한 한국 독립운동에 대한 그녀의 정치적 입장을 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 부록에는 사진들이 수록되어 있다.
