We investigate whether financial development is associated with economic growth using Korean 16 regional panel data from 1999 to 2013. An increase in the quantity of financial loans exerts an adverse effect on regional growth while the improvement of the efficiency of banking industries have statistically significant and positive effect on regional growth. As financial sector expands, the positive effect of efficiency on growth decreases, showing decreasing returns of efficiency. Also, the negative effect of financial services on growth is reduced as the efficiency is enhanced. These findings suggest that the policies to improve the efficiency of banking industries rather than the policies to provide more loans are more effective for regional economic growth.

본 논문은 금융의 양적 공급보다 은행산업의 효율성이 경제성장을 제고한다는 점을 실증적으로 밝힌다. 1999년부터 2013년까지의 한국 내 16개 지역의 경제성장률을 금융 공급 지표, 효율성 지표, 그리고 기타 성장에 영향을 미치는 요인들로 회귀 분석한 결과를 보면, 금융 공급의 증가는 경제성장에 부정적인 영향을 미친 반면에 은행 효율성의 개선은 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 다만 금융부문이 비대해질수록 은행 효율성의 성장 제고효과는 감소하여 효율성 증진은 수익 감소의 특성을 보였다. 또한 금융 공급의 증가가 경제성장에 미치는 효과는 부정적이나 은행 효율성이 개선되면 부정적 효과가 감소하는 경향이 나타난다. 따라서 지역경제의 성장을 촉진하기 위해서는 단순히 지역 내의 금융서비스 공급을 증가시키는 것보다 지역은행산업의 효율성을 개선하는 정책을 시행해야 할 것이다.
