This paper investigates the substitution effect of foreign workers on the domestic workers in Incheon regional area. Using Panel data, we find empirical evidences that foreign workers create substitution effect to the domestic worker at the regional labor market, but it is limited to the small-medium sized company with less than 50 workers. The wage effect, however, does not exist at all regardless firm sizes. This empirical results suggest that the foreign workers in the Incheon area provide imperfect substitution effect on labor demand competing with domestic workers for the small-medium sized companies.

본 연구는 인천지역의 패널자료를 이용하여 외국인 근로자의 유입이 인천지역 내 내국인 근로자의 고용 및 임금 수준에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석한다. 회귀분석 결과, 인천지역의 외국인 근로자 유입은 50인 미만 중소기업 내국인 근로자의 고용을 대체하는 고용대체효과(substitution effect)가 존재하는 반면, 50인 이상의 기업에 대해서는 통계적으로 유의미한 대체효과가 존재하지 않는 것으로 나타나, 외국인 근로자가 주로 소규모의 영세 사업장에서 내국인 근로자와 경쟁적인 관계에 있음을 보였다. 그러나 외국인 근로자의 유입은 내국인 근로자의 임금 수준에는 기업의 규모에 상관없이 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않고 있는 것으로 나타나, 외국인 근로자와 내국인 근로자 간에 불완전대체 관계가 존재하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
